What would you choose? What do you think is right? Or what is in your heart? “Dead Star” short story by “Paz Marquez Benitez” written in 1925. Alfredo and Esperanza have been engaged for four years and are meant to get married in May, but just like in other long-term relationships their feelings for each other change. Alfredo then met Julia, and he give Julia something that he was not free to give, In 6 weeks, his 4 years feelings change. But not like in other forbidden love where they choose their second love, Alfredo chooses his first love. He choose his first love because that’s what he thinks he need to do and that’s what society says.
"Did you ever have to choose between something you wanted to do and something you had to do?" -Alfredo. Alfredo thinks of choosing Julia over his fiancée Esperanza but what people say matters to him most, he surrenders to the social expectations that lead to a loveless marriage. Alfredo married Esperanza but was he happy? Was he contented? No. In 8 years of marriage Alfredo can’t get over with Julia, he longed for Julia, and he kept thinking about “what could have been”. Alfredo goes for a business trip to the town where Julia lived, and they talked, and that’s when he realize that the spark was gone, the perceived love he had felt for Julia for all those years was liked a light of dead stars, long extinguished, yet seemingly still in their appointed places in havens. The last few lines of Alfredo reveal the true emotions of Alfredo. “He could not take his eyes from her face. What had she lost? Or was the loss his? He felt an impersonal curiosity creeping into his gaze. The girl must have noticed, for her cheek darkened in a blush. Gently--was it experimentally? --he pressed her hand at parting; but his own felt undisturbed and emotionless. Did she still care? The answer to the question hardly interested him. The young moon had set, and from the uninviting cot he could see one-half of a star-studded sky. So that was all over. Why had he obstinately clung to that dream? So, all these years--since when? --he had been seeing the light of dead stars, long extinguished, yet seemingly still in their appointed places in the heavens.” That’s when Alfredo found out that the feelings he thought he had for Julia are now gone. That’s what the dead star symbolizes- that we can still the light of the star even though it is dead so we have the illusion that the star is alive but in reality, it is already dead, in my point of view that’s the symbolism Paz Marquez Benitez wants to pertain.
Alfredo and Esperanza had a relationship that was once full of enthusiasm, full of love, and happiness but they faced a circumstance that made their relationship loveless. Alfredo cheated. He cheated with Julia. And Esperanza knew that Alfredo is cheating yet she stayed. They got married. Alfredo marry Esperanza not because he realizes he still love her but because that’s what other says, he surrender to the social expectation that made their marriage loveless, in 8 years of their marriage Alfredo always longed for Julia, he longed for someone he thought he love. They say in loving 2 different women there’s someone that you love the most but, in this short story, I think he isn’t truly in love or should I say Alfredo didn’t love any of them, because “he just fell in love with the idea of love”.
