JSA vs Creature Commandos
After using the info discovered from Doctor Destiny’s dreams, the JSA continue their trek forward through a German forest, on their way to find T.O. Morrow and end the war. Flash and Hawkman scouted out the suspected location and confirmed the base looked heavily guarded. They have to have the right spot! Doctor Fate teleports the rest of the team 7 miles Southwest of the base near a forested waterfront to set up camp and strategize.
The team begins strategizing a number of options for making it into the Nazi base. Black Canary is adamant that they use a stealth approach to sneak in but Hawkman, Atom Smasher, and Wildcat try to convince the team to go in swinging. Green Lantern does his best to quell the argument but then Red Tornado offers up an alternative. Flash asks Doctor Fate what he feels fate should lead them to do right now but the Doctor informs them that isn’t how it works. Plus, Doctor Fate shares that they should be cautious because he senses the forces of arcane chaos magic upon them as they speak. Red Tornado asserts his simulated outcomes dictate a combination of the two tactics has a 89% chance of successful infiltration. Wildcat says they shouldn’t waste time listening to a robot, especially one built by the guy they are going to try to stop. Flash and Lantern defend Red but we can feel some tension between the team right now.
The tension is broken when a startling howl battle cry falls from the branches above, as Warren Griffith, the werewolf, lands on the back of Atom Smasher. Wildcat tries to pull it off but gets punched in the face by the lumbering Eliot Taylor and Aten the mummy’s sword clashes with Hawkman’s mace Lantern uses his constructs on the adversaries as Canary screeches but gunfire jolts out of the dark forest from G.I. Robot. Flash charge into the gunfire toward the threat. Throughout all of this, Fate levitates and begins practicing an incantation that will hopefully drive all chaos-imbued undead forces clean of their dark magic.
Wildcat notices that throughout the entire battle, Red Tornado has been standing motionless. Wildcat sees this as direct evidence that Red Tornado betrayed them! What he doesn’t see is Nina Mazursky lurking below the water running radio interference that messes with Red’s sensors. He is essentially blind and deaf thank’s to Nina’s tech. Flash makes it to G.I. Robot and gives him a wallup but standing behind him was Medusa, who stares him in the eyes and turns him to stone. Black Canary is then grabbed from behind by two of the Bride’s arms with another hand placing a gun to her head.
Bride tells Black Canary to die, Nazi scum. Before Bride pulls the trigger, Canary headbutts her and screams her into a tree. Wildcat says, “who you calling Nazi scum, you Nazi scum?” Doctor Fate stops his incantation and questions this and says they are a group of Americans who are trying to put an end to the fascist power and they are on their way there now. G.I. Robot expresses sadness that he did not get the chance to kill any Nazis. Nina emerges from the water and Red boots back up. She explains that they were given a mission to take out their base camp as they were told they were Nazi agents. Atom Smasher questions by who and she says the mission was relayed to them by Eliot Taylor. They look around for him and don’t see him at first but then they realize he is lying dead on the ground with a bullet through his brain.
The commandos freak out and hostilities grow as the commandos believe one of them killed Eliot. G.I. tells Bride he is sorry that her husband is dead but she rolls her eyes and says he isn’t her husband. Green Lantern defends this by telling them to look around because none of their men use guns. Hawkman says one of your dead eyes must’ve missed us and hit your own. Canary points at the stone Flash and says she bets G.I. missed him. Hawkman demands Medusa unstones Flash now too. Medusa says thats not how her power works. The JSA panic but Doctor Fate says he has the ability to undo the curse but it will take some time. The JSA still isn’t satisfied for the reason behind why they were attacked and how convenient it was that the person who told them to was dead. Wildcat accuses Red of being in on it because he wasn’t moving during the attack. Nina explains that his stiffness was her doing with the device she had running interference. Wildcat still seems unsatisfied with her answer and asks who gave Taylor the order then. Bride says they can take them to their camp, who just so happens to be American soldiers as well. The JSA is surprised to hear this claim and Hawkman says this is likely to be a trap. Bride says maybe it is, maybe it isn’t, so are they going to come and find out. The JSA talk it over then hesitantly decide to agree to follow them to the camp. Doctor Fate stays behind to begin the process of reversing Flash’s stone body.
The Creature Commandos lead the JSA to a legitimate American military camp just a few clicks away. From inside of a tent, Rick Flagg emerges. He looks surprised to see the costumed heroes and also asks why the Commandos are outside of their barracks. Green Lantern tells him that’s what they were hoping he would tell them. Flagg orders Nina to explain themselves and she says Eliot Taylor came to them with a late night urgent mission. Flagg says he gave no such order, they know they are not authorized for the field without him as their lead agent. Flagg orders to speak with Taylor now but they explain he took one to the brain, no resurrecting him this time. It’s also revealed that they cannot heal or resurrect anyone else because their scientist, Brainwave was stolen back by the Nazis after working for them with operation paper clip. Flagg orders the Commandos back to their barracks and invites Lantern, Canary, and Wildcat in to talk.
Back at their barracks, the Commandos talk and Medussa says something doesn’t feel right. Bride says duh it is obvious they were set up. G.I. agrees this is not the typical nature of their missions but Eliot did say it was an urgent matter. Warren growls and Aten mentions how convenient it is that the guy who send us on the mission id dead and presses everybody to see who shot him. All of the Creature Commandos argue and are adamant that none of them could have. Medusa says its obvious someone on the JSA is lying but Nina reminds them that none of them even use guns. Bride says screw this, why wait around to eventually get pegged as bloodthirsty monsters for the collective millionth time in her life. She tells them anyone is welcome to join her to get some answers. All Commandos leave the barracks to talk to Flagg except for a sheepish Nina who nervously stays behind.
In the tent, Flagg, Sgt. Rock, and Ben Hunter explain to the heroes that Flagg did not order the monsters to attack them, so something fishy is going on. Wildcat expresses his prejudice against Red Tornado because he was created by fascist roboticist T.O. Morrow. The American soldiers are shocked to hear this because Steve Trevor lost the very first division of costumed heroes to an android made by Morrow posing as a hero. Canary and Lantern defend Red since, well, he did already try to kill them but he overcame his programming and has proved his loyalty in countless battles since. Flagg supports Wildcat’s point by saying they know T.O. is very intelligent and may be playing the long game, Red could be a hazard. Canary sternly denies this but they argue without proof, he’s a quantitative liability. Wildcat tried to convince her as a friend, but she won’t have it. Sgt. Rock buts in by saying it’s pointless right now to argue over what might have insisted the attack. He says it’s obvious, they’re monsters, freaks! They’re demonic by nature and can’t be controlled. Ben Hunter argues saying he knows this isn’t true. Rock has seen them carry out valuable missions for the US government with his own eyes. Lantern interjects by saying they don’t give them much of a choice. Flagg says, “excuse me.” Lantern continues by asking if any of them volunteered to be here or if they have to do what you say or else. Flagg silently disapproves of Lantern questioning their methods. A worried Atom Smasher then interrupts their meeting to say, “Uh, the Commandos are outside of the tent and are refusing to return to their barracks.
They all exit the tent and to witness the tension-packed standoff of the Commandos and soldiers. Flagg steps forward and tells them he ordered them to the barracks. Bride questions why, just so they can sit around until they are eventually deemed permanently disposable like Eliot Taylor. Rock says that moment will come sooner if they prove they went rogue. Bride calls bullshit and knows somebody gave Taylor a suicide mission thinking the JSA would take them out. Diana says that’s now how they do things but Bride interjects that whoever sent them didn’t think so. Hunter tries to get them to calm down and let them and say let them handle their own investigation. Medusa says no way because it will be swept under the rug. Aten says they want answers or are done and aren’t going to end up like Taylor. Warren growls and puffs his chest. The JSA look around and Flagg says they are not permitted to leave. Bride protests and says then they can try and stop them. The Commandos turn around and begin to leave the base as Flagg and the JSA give a knowing look that it is over.
The Commandos continue to walk away when all of a sudden, there is a pop and Medusa falls to the ground, bullet through the head. The Commandos snap around in a defensive stance and face Sgt. Rock is holding his pistol. Bride calls Rock a son of a bitch and the Commandos charge the soldiers. Hunter and Flagg try to restrain Rock who screams at the monsters calling them abominations damned to hell. The JSA can’t stand by and idly let the American soldiers be torn apart, so they engage the Commandos.
JSA and Creature Commandos clash with the JSA attempting to defend the soldiers. Rock admits yes it was he who ordered Eliot and the crew into a suicide mission then shot him in the head to cover his tracks. He can’t stand the vile creatures who escape death and is repulsed by what they did to his friend, Gunner who died and was unceremoniously brought back to life as G.I. Robot. JSA and Commandos keep brawling when Doctor Fate teleports onto the field and Flash zooms in. The tides turn and the JSA manages to handle the monsters, either containing them or forcing them down. Green Lantern creates a large cell holding Warren, Aten, G.I., and Bride. Rock yells in victory that these monstrosities will be executed but then Flagg pistol whips him in the face, knocking him out.
The monsters face their doom, but Canary shares a knowing look with Flagg. Lantern says they let them go and they have done their duty. Flagg tries to convince them not to but Wildcat says like she said, try and stop them. Lantern lowers his construct and the Hawkman says sorry for how they were treated. The monsters run off into the European countryside except for Nina and G.I. Flagg disapproves for helping them and Wildcat claps back by saying he’d be more dead than any of them if they weren’t here to save their sorry souls. Flagg agrees and thanks them for their help. Canary says she hoped Rock will be punished and Flagg assures them he will be dishonorably discharged for his actions.
Canary says that they are about to go take care of another mess for them as well. The JSA then leave back to camp to regroup before they infiltrate T.O.’s fortress.
In a post-credit scene, we see Rick Flagg reporting to Steve about the incident that just unfolded. Steve tells Flagg that they will have to recover their lost assets given that have sensitive information regarding the US government. Steve also says that he has run in to the JSA before and trust them. He now believes a second costumed crew run by the government might prove effective after all…
