Green Lantern: Arms Race
On OA, the Guardians are scolding Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) for favoring Earth over the other planets in his sector. As protector of sector 2814, Hal must divide his time equally among the planets. The Guardians tell Hal to continue Abin Sur’s task of finding an Earthling competent enough to be their officer on earth, full time. They sense unrest, so they urge him to fulfill his task quickly.
On Earth, Dr. Hammond (still infected by Parallax) is giving a presentation and demonstration of his new inhuman and fearful dones to the government and the military. Colonel Ferris and Amanda Waller reject his weapons proposal. Hammond’s methods are too radical and dangerous to civilians.
Hammond is extremely upset by this. To prove the military wrong, he gets to work in his lab. He intends to release his weapons and cause great fear. He experiments in his lab which increases his own mental capacity to control his new civilian patrol warheads with his own mind.
Hal gets to Earth with a new ring and battery. He meets at an arranged location with the president, Waller, and Ferris. They agree to the conditions for Earth to receive its own Green Lantern. Waller and Ferris propose Captain Scott (future Captain Atom) to hold this position. He is a great soldier and a great man. However, Hal reveals that is not how this works. The Ring must choose its own wielder. Reluctantly, Waller and Ferris agree to these terms, and Hal releases the ring into the sky.
Meanwhile, John Stewart, a legally blind military vet, is holding a support group for PTSD military service men. They speak about the struggles of returning back to civilian life after the traumas of war. Stewart speaks of an explosion that took away his sight. He does great work with the soldiers. At the end of the meeting, the group invites him for a drink, but Stewart says he has to clean-up and sends them away. As he’s moving chairs, a Green Lantern ring appears and tells him he’s been chosen to serve in the Green Lantern Core.
John sees the ring and initially rejects it. He has already served, but ultimately feels compelled to return to his duty to serve and tries on the ring. The ring powers him up and cures his vision. He realizes that he can create anything with this new power and he begins to use his military engineering knowhow to test his ring. Just then, he is called away because there has been a distress call somewhere else on Earth.
At the military base, Waller and Ferris are still angry that they didn’t get a say in the Green Lantern position. Just then, Hammond and his mechs break into the facility and reeks havoc with his new overly destructive drones. Hal fights and defends the people. However, he struggles to take the offensive and defensive at the same time. Hal sends out a distress signal. Hal asks Waller where their defensive weapons are, and she exclaims that what’s attacking them are the military’s defensive weapons, turned against them by Hammond’s new tech!
At that moment, John arrives at the scene to help take out Hammond. Hal and John take him out together. There was a point where Hammond had a weapon aimed straight at John, and Hal saved him in time! John captures Hammond in a construct. After the victory, Ferris and Waller explain they are happy with John, a fellow soldier and military man, as the new Green Lantern of Earth. While his duties are to the Green Lantern Core, John Stewart agrees to aid the government in times of need.
The last scene shows Hal with Carol. He tells her that he is no longer going to be on Earth as much. The two star-crossed lovers will miss each other when they are apart.
