Green Lantern: Alan Scott
Alan and his gay lover, Sam, talk about how they wish they could one day be accepted. Sam kisses Alan as he goes off to work but one of Alan’s railroad coworkers sees the kiss and looks disgusted.
Alan is a railroad engineer and he is called to go fix a set of railroad tracks that has been mysteriously demolished. While on the train on the way to his job site, he is ambushed by a few of his coworkers who want to bully him for being gay. Word got out and because it is 1940, they are traditionally homophobic. The roughians push him off the train about a mile before the job site so that he will have to walk the rest of the way there through the rough and rocky canyons and caves. While maneuvering around some decrepit rocks, the ground gives away and he falls into a hole. In the hole, he finds a very magical ancient looking glowing green artifact. (We know this is an old lost green lantern ring and power battery).
As the railroad men arrive at the job site, they see railroad tracks that have been shred to pieces as of some heavy machinery did so. They find this odd because they are in the middle of a bog swamp area. Well, they are trying to repair it, the zombie-like Solomon Grundy comes, bellowing out of the swamp and towards the men. He repeats his signature phrase and attacks.
Back at the cave, Alan is drawn to it and puts on the ring. Because this is a much older lost lantern, there is no costume that automatically forms with the ring. He exclaims that this thing is too damn bright and magically, an umbrella made of hard light is conjured between him and the lantern. Alan is shocked and calls his hand back, accidentally creating a giant green fist that crumbles the wall. He looks down and is happy at this amazing discovery. Just then, Alan can make out some terrifying screams from the distance. He hears the railroad engineers being attacked. He then miraculously lifts himself up with the ring and heads in their direction.
What Alan Finds is a number of immobile bodies and Grundy laying waste to them. Alan uses constructs to have a knock-down drag-out fight with him. Grundy keeps saying his rhyme and then throws a yellow train car that shatters the ring’s shield and seemingly breaks Alan’s arm. Grundy shouts to leave Grundy alone. Inspired by Alan’s bravery, the other railroad men begin to throw things at Grundy and fight back more. This only in rages Solomon Grundy Moore, and he begins to charge toward them. Alan then realizes that compassion is the answer so he creates a construct of a brick wall that stops Grungy in his tracks and tells them to stop and just let him be. Alan then calms down Grundy and he walks off. Alan says they are better off leaving these tracks to the monster.
Alan flies off and shows Sam his new power. Alan uses this as an opportunity to say it could be a ring meant for Sam as an engagement. Sam loves Alan, but he denies the proposal because he thinks the world will never accept them.
Outside of their window comes a bright green glow and descending from space comes Abin Sur and his partner, Sinestro. They are responding to a Lantern Corps energy signature beacon that wasn’t on record for this space sector. Abin appreciates and realizes that Alan is the type of man to do some good with the ring and convinces Sinestro to let him keep it. They leave Alan with the ring.
Some time later, they are listening to the radio and the newscaster reports that a monster is terrorizing downtown. Sam stops him and tells him to wear a disguise before he goes out to help. This is where Sam shows him the Green Lantern costume he made him.
Alan arrives downtown and investigates a man who was trying to handle damage control. The man says a few railroad guys brought him in all tied up. They thought he would be perfect for a freak show. Apparently that backfired. Grundy is on a rampage. Alan tries to get the police to stop attacking Grundy. They are not cooperating. Scott then puts a wall up around between himself and Grundy and Grundy recognizes him. He offers to take Grundy back where he belongs and he slowly calms down as Green Lantern lowers his barrier. The civilians look on in awe.
Out of nowhere, a steak of light smashes into Grundy and we see Jay Garrick has appeared. This makes Grundy furious and he charges at Jay while Jay dodges and frustrates Grundy. Alan yells at Jay and tells him he had it under control. Jay says he realizes that and is sorry but offers to help. Alan comes up with the idea for Jay to take a dive and make it look like Grundy defeated Flash so he will calm down. Jay does along with this and gets hit by Grundy with a last-second green construct pad to soften the blow a bit. Alan then tells Grundy to get on as he makes a giant baseball glove to Cary him back to the swamp.
Grundy goes back into exile in the swamp. We see that Jay followed Alan to the swamp and once Grundy is gone, Jay tells Alan that they’re putting together a team and he’s just the type of guy they are looking for…
