The Rohingya Muslims are an Indo-Aryan ethnic group that primarily reside in the Rakhine State of Myanmar. As Antonio Guterres put it, they are one of, if not, the most discriminated people in the world". They represent the largest Muslim community in Myanmar. They have an independent language and culture and are the descendants of Arab traders.
There were over a million Rohingyas living in Rakhine before the genocide, but the latest numbers are unknown. Life for the Rohingyas is not an easy one. With a government dead set on removing every inch of proof of their existence, every day they fight for survival. And it hasn't been an easy fight.
The Burmese government refuses to give them citizenship and excludes them from population consensus saying that they don't count as citizens. In 2014 they were excluded from consensus as the government believes they are illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
Rohingyas are forced to make perilous journeys to escape Myanmar and they try their level best to escape the communal violence and mass killings that are prevalent in the country.
In 2017, a gigantic crackdown by the Burmese Army left thousands homeless and dead. Every effort to escape was made, either by foot or sea. This act was called the “textbook example of ethnic cleansing" by the UN. Since then many smaller genocides have continued taken place. However, the army refuses to take responsibility for the mass killing and says that it attacked Rohingya militants. However, the entire world is aware of the dirty truth.
This genocide broke out after a few militants attacked 30 police posts. The army-backed by local Buddhist mobs attacked the innocent civilians and burned down entire villages. At least 6,700 Rohingya, including at least 730 children under the age of five, were killed in the month after the violence broke out. The Myanmar military also raped and abused Rohingya women and girls. At least 288 villages were partially or totally destroyed by fire in northern Rakhine state after August 2017.
The statistics and details are heartbreaking and the world is still silent about it. We, as the global community, must take a stand for these Muslims and raise our voices for the betterment of these lives.
