Only a week prior to the transition of power in the White House, president Donald J. Trump faces the second impeachment of his presidential career. Marking history as the only president in US history to be impeached twice.
The House of Representatives voted on Wednesday, the 13th of January, to impeach Donald Trump. This decision followed a riot that occurred at the US Capitol and resulted in multiple deaths on the 6th of January. Trump's role? “Incitement of Resurrection”. The president is being charged with encouraging this horrendous attack. After being notified of the mob, his words to the people included referring to them as “patriots” along with “beautiful people”, which sparked the anger of many Americans.
From evidence dating back months ago, Trump had been accused of the inspiration behind it all. From claims of a “stolen election” to the clear words of “We are going to march down to the Capitol”, it is clear to understand the passion his supporters had to please his wishes along with their own.
According to voting numbers on this cause, the impeachment decision was based off of a 232-197 count. The near future holds the impeachment article reaching the Senate. As for the trial could take place on the 19th of January. A key factor that differs the House votes from the Senate is the required vote count. While the House required the majority of its voters to successfully pass the article, the Senate needs two-thirds of its members.
Although Donald Trump is nearing the end of his second term - a successful impeachment could affect his life far past the term. Many consequences will come into action, including the inability to run for president again, benefits that presidents obtain after presidency, and possibly secret service. Though it is unclear what the future holds, it does not look too well for the president.
