I started this with the basic idea of creating something that felt organic. I didn't have a particular vision or objective in mind (other than the shape of the circle. I started in the centre and concentrated on the process of growth with a few simple rules about spacing and the basic building block shapes. Beyond that, I wanted to follow my instincts. Sometimes the shapes would reach out into uncharted areas. At other times, they would build closely on the pattern of existing shapes — whatever felt right at the time.
Eventually, this work became an exploration of change and repetition. The shapes change — sometimes gradually, sometimes dramatically. At the same time, similar patterns would appear in different parts of the work.
