David Gillum, PhD
Throughout my career, I have embraced a variety of leadership roles, from steering safety and compliance programs to shaping research administration. As the Associate Vice President at the University of Nevada, Reno, I oversee a broad range of teams, including Animal Resources, Environmental Health & Safety, Research Integrity and Security, and Sponsored Projects. My focus is on fostering a culture of compliance, safety, and collaboration to enhance the University's research and teaching mission.
With over 30 years of experience, I have led diverse and inclusive teams at academic institutions and professional associations. I am recognized for my expertise in safety, security, compliance, and risk management, and have been involved in the strategic planning and execution of complex, large-scale initiatives. My work emphasizes practical solutions, continuous improvement, and mentoring staff and students to achieve their goals. I find great fulfillment in supporting the growth and success of others and creating environments where innovation and excellence can flourish.
Academically, I am interested in exploring the social and ethical dimensions of emerging technologies, particularly in areas such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology governance, genome editing, synthetic biology, dual-use research of concern, and potential pandemic pathogens. I am committed to advancing these fields responsibly, with a strong emphasis on public engagement and transparency, ensuring that societal voices are included in shaping the future of technology.
My research and insights have been featured in a variety of respected publications, including Science Magazine, Slate Magazine, Issues in Science and Technology, StatNews, Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, Health Security, Applied Biosafety, The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, and The Conversation. These contributions reflect my commitment to addressing critical issues at the intersection of safety, security, ethics, and public policy.
I have had the honor of serving as the 2020 President of ABSA International and was recognized in 2019 with the FBI Directors Community Leadership Award for my contributions to improving biosecurity. In 2024, I received the Everett Hanel, Jr. Presidential Award from ABSA International.Â
I earned my B.A. in Chemistry from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, my M.S. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and my Ph.D. from Arizona State University in the Human and Social Dimensions of Science and Technology.
Growing up in the historic town of Goldfield, Nevada, and graduating from Tonopah High School, I learned the value of community, resilience, perseverance, and responsibility. These values continue to inspire my work and commitment to advancing science in ways that benefit society.
