Dr. David Green is a Doctor of Music Education and conductor whose career is defined by a deep-seated commitment to the artistic and educational vitality of California’s Central Valley. Based in Bakersfield, Dr. Green serves as a VAPA Academic Coach for the Bakersfield City School District. In this capacity, he supports and mentors music and arts educators, designs curriculum, and coordinates districtwide initiatives, drawing upon his doctoral research into teacher induction and professional longevity to strengthen the region’s instructional landscape.
On the podium, Dr. Green maintains a prolific presence across the collegiate and professional spectrum. He currently serves as the Music Director of the Bakersfield Winds and the Conductor of the Kings Symphony Orchestra, where he facilitates high-level musical collaborations that serve diverse communities. These current roles are informed by a successful three-year tenure as the Concert Band Director at Porterville College, during which he spearheaded a significant revitalization and membership expansion of the program. Across all his ensembles, Dr. Green focuses on providing meaningful, transformative experiences that bridge the gap between academic rigor and the cultural life of the Central Valley.
Dr. Green’s foundation as a program builder was established during an eleven-year tenure as the Instrumental Music Director at Independence High School. During this time, he directed concert bands, jazz ensembles, marching bands, and a full symphony orchestra, cultivating a deep belief in the importance of student access to high-quality arts education. His reputation for leadership earned him a seat on the California Band Directors Association (CBDA) Board of Directors, where he serves the state’s music community through executive leadership and strategic communications.
A dedicated scholar-practitioner, Dr. Green earned his Doctor of Music Education from Liberty University with Academic Distinction. His academic background also includes a Master of Arts in Band Conducting from Sam Houston State University (via the American Band College) and a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from California State University, Fresno. During his undergraduate studies at Fresno State, he pursued rigorous applied training in both trombone and piano, a dual-instrumental foundation that culminated in a senior recital performed on the trombone. His professional philosophy is rooted in the concept of "stewardship," focusing on student rapport, radical kindness, and the creation of inclusive "communities of practice."
Beyond the concert hall, Dr. Green is a passionate leader and participant in worship and praise music. A versatile multi-instrumentalist, he has extensive experience leading worship sets and performing within various contemporary praise teams. His technical facility extends across a wide array of instruments, including acoustic and electric guitar, bass guitar, drum set, and keyboard. For Dr. Green, his involvement in sacred music is a vital extension of his musical identity, allowing him to use his diverse skillset to serve his faith community and foster collaborative musical experiences.
Despite his diverse professional commitments, Dr. Green’s work is anchored by his family. He is married to Kendra, a former music educator and arts outreach leader with the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra. Together, they are the proud parents of two sons, Charlie and Henry. Watching his children grow remains a primary source of inspiration for his work, reinforcing his mission to ensure that music education continues to flourish for the next generation of students in Kern County.
