David Cheah: 'Interwoven Journeys'
Series synopsis:
Interlace patterns can be found in various cultures around the world but I am particularly drawn to those found in Luang Prabang temple ornamentation in Laos. In my latest series of works, they are like visual metaphors of life’s interwoven journeys set against botanical drawings which in their own way are metaphors for the transient beauty of life.
A recurring abstract motif is the leaf or petal shape created by overlapping circles referencing overlapping traditions and shared experiences encountered on life’s journey. They contain patterns found globally including some from my ancestral clan house and others found in batik sarongs worn by my ancestors. In batik terms referred to as ‘Sekar Jagad’ or 'flowers of the universe', they are shared by many cultures in a world of interconnectedness.
