Dave's Faves 1998

1. Heave Ho – Smash Mouth / Fush Yu Mang

This reminds me of an apartment Steve Wolff and I had on Como Avenue when we were going to the U. More easy listening.

2. History Repeating – Propellerheads (featuring Miss Shirley Bassey) / Decksanddrumsandrockandroll

Some techno stuff that John Mestad gave me with a great vocal. This is the most accessible cut on the CD

3. Amnesia – Chumbawamba / Tubthumper

Speaking of techno … this is for all you middle aged folks who are experiencing memory gaps.

4. Zoot Suit Riot – Cherry Poppin' Daddies / Zoot Suit Riot

Swing is back, and these guys have it. Lots of very hot tunes.

5. The Dirty Boogie – The Brian Setzer Orchestra / The Dirty Boogie

More swing with a guitar front from Mr. Stray Cat himself.

6. What A Party – Lamont Cranston Blues Band / Roll With Me

An excellent new CD from the Cranstons. This hit my car player quite often earlier in the year.

7. Runnin' Blue – Boz Scaggs / My Time: A Boz Scaggs Anthology (1969 - 1997)

This starts out an excellent anthology of Boz’s stuff. It includes all of his great 70’s hits.

8. Spit Of Love – Bonnie Raitt / Fundamental

We saw her at the Fair this year, and it was one the best I’ve seen. This cut has some very greasy slide by Bonnie.

9. Mississippi – Sheryl Crow / The Globe Sessions

Sheryl’s newest – this sounds like the Pretenders in spots.

10. I’m Not Running Any More – John Mellencamp / John Mellencamp

This just in .. he keeps putting out quality recordings. It sounds more like earlier stuff.

11. One Belief Away – Bonnie Raitt / Fundamental

This was an instant Dave’s Fave the minute I heard it. A perfect way to end the side.

12. This Cat's On a Hot Tin Roof – The Brian Setzer Orchestra / The Dirty Boogie

This is really fun stuff. I skipped seeing these guys at the Zoo this summer, because I’d seen the Stray Cats and wasn’t impressed. Now I wish I’d gone.

13. Walkin' On The Sun – Smash Mouth / Fush Yu Mang

Their big hit. I knew I was going to like these guys when I saw the picture on the back of the CD of a Sears Sivertone Amplifier just like the one I had in junior high.

14. Slow Down – Keb' Mo' / Slow Down

Keb’ sounded great warming up Bonnie at the Fair.

15. Hey Pocky Way – The Neville Brothers / Treacherous: A History of the Neville Brothers

This isn’t really new, I’ve had this CD for quite a few years. It resurfaced after seeing the Nevilles at the Cabooze.

16. The Ride – Prince / Crystal Ball

Prince plays the blues.

17. Hidden Charms – Howlin' Wolf / Chess Blues Guitar

An excellent collection of ‘killer fretwork’ from Chess. This has been in heavy rotation all year.

18. My Little Demon – Fleetwood Mac / The Dance

I resisted this CD because of the 70’s group retread trend. But when I saw their video, I was mightily impressed. It’s better than a greatest hits package, if only for Don’t Stop with the USC Marching Band.

19. Haushinka – Green Day / Nimrod

OK, so I like Green Day. They have that high slashing guitar factor.

20. Delicious – Semisonic / Great Divide

Local band made good

21. Miss Missy – John Mellencamp / John Mellencamp

This has a sweet little riff.

22. Love String – Luther Allison / Soul Fixin' Man

A funky tune from a 1994 CD by Luther.

23. Big Love – Fleetwood Mac / The Dance

Actually just Lindsey Buckingham. My number one Fave of the year. I almost put it on the tape twice.
