The aUDIO study
The Understanding Diabetes Drug Initiation and Offerings (aUDIO) study examines decision-making regarding GLP-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) and sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitor (SGLT2i) use among patients with type 2 diabetes. We analyzed data from the Verilogue Point-of-Practice database, which contains de-identified transcripts from over 235,000 real-world clinic visits with over 600 US-based, board-certified clinicians across diverse non-academic outpatient practices.
Our sample included encounters between January 2025 and May 2026 with primary care clinicians or endocrinologists involving adult patients (≥18 years) who had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes for at least 6 months and where a GLP-1RA or SGLT2i medication was discussed or prescribed. This timeframe and patient selection allowed us to examine decision-making and cost discussions after patients had attempted first-line treatment (dietary modifications and metformin).
This research was supported by the Harvard Medical School Robert H. Ebert Career Development Award.

aUDIO baby monitor: Reproductive Health Conversations in Diabetes Care
Elena Faugno, MPH, LICSW (Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute Senior Analyst and doctoral student, University of Melbourne) analyzed reproductive health conversations in diabetes clinic visits. From our sample of 909 transcripts, we identified encounters containing reproductive health terminology using lemmatized search—a linguistic technique that reduces words to their base form to capture variations in phrasing.
Search Strategy
We queried transcripts for terms related to:
Reproductive status and family planning: pregnancy, pregnant, birth, baby, fertility, conception, miscarriage, gestational, PCOS
Providers: gynecologist, obstetrician, OB-GYN
Contraception: contraception, condom, IUD, spermicide
Reproductive hormones: estrogen, progesterone, hCG
This approach captured diverse phrasing while maintaining specificity to reproductive health discussions in the context of diabetes management.
