The migration surge into the borders of the European Union has become a major problem in Europe as it has led to several challenges to societal integration and political legitimacy. It is also a danger to cultural identity, domestic and labour market stability as well as internal security, such that a migrant is often perceived as a threat to European society. The first part of the paper attempts to throw light on this migration-security nexus in Europe and how migration has developed into a security issue. The second part discusses how the two crises of migration and terrorism have come to be intrinsically associated with each other. The refugee crisis and the terrorism threat are related in the minds of many Europeans as they believe incoming refugees increase the likelihood of terrorism in their country. The paper argues that the political process of the securitization of migration and its association to terrorism abuse takes place within a wider politicization in which immigrants are a security threat. The concluding part of the paper examines the evolution of the European migration policy from the terrorist attacks of 9/11 up to the surge of the pandemic Covid-19 with an institutional perspective.

There are multiple ways in which corruption is linked to violent conflict, some direct and some indirect. For ordinary citizens, the experience of this nexus is the denial of basic freedoms and rights. In spite of such bleak circumstances, people can move from being victims and bystanders to becoming a force for transforming their societies. Citizens are engaging in civil resistance to curb corruption and win accountability and justice. This article: explores the linkages between corruption and violence; identifies the conceptual and practical limitations of top-down, technical approaches to combating corruption; articulates a bottom-up approach in which the civic realm is included in the anti-corruption equation; and presents case studies of civic action campaigns and movements under conditions of violence, post-conflict transformation or state capture by violent crime syndicates. From these, general lessons learned are distilled.

Our capacity to systematically understand and mitigate risks to our food and resource system is still only fragmentary at best. The nexus approach allows for a reconciliation of the water, food, and energy system with the integrity of the resource base. It helps decision makers avoid adverse or suboptimal outcomes through a sound understanding of consumption, production, and resource systems. Through nexus, we can incorporate the drivers of change such as demographics, socioeconomic development, technology, and climate change.

Many global challenges, though interconnected, have been addressed singly, at times reducing one problem while exacerbating others. Nexus approaches simultaneously examine interactions among multiple sectors. Recent quantitative studies have revealed that nexus approaches can uncover synergies and detect trade-offs among sectors. If well implemented, nexus approaches have the potential to reduce negative surprises and promote integrated planning, management and governance. However, application and implementation of nexus approaches are in their infancy. No studies have explicitly quantified the contributions of nexus approaches to progress toward meeting the Sustainable Development Goals. To further implement nexus approaches and realize their potential, we propose a systematic procedure and provide perspectives on future directions. These include expanding nexus frameworks that consider interactions among more sectors, across scales, between adjacent and distant places, and linkages with Sustainable Development Goals; incorporating overlooked drivers and regions; diversifying nexus toolboxes; and making these strategies central in policy-making and governance for integrated Sustainable Development Goal implementation.

An extensive amount of study in recent years has focused on the relationship between teaching and research among academic staff, with many concluding that an environment of increased scrutiny and assessment has tilted the priority towards research. Few studies have looked at how students perceive the teaching-research nexus, and this paper offers a new perspective on the issue by considering the perceptions of exchange students from the United States and the United Kingdom.

Our equations in physics often have multiple symbols. You can often help to make sense of the relationships in an equation by considering special cases, in particular, extreme or limiting cases of one or more of the symbols.
