Intelligent Systems for Date Fruit

Robotic Harvesting and Visual Yield Estimation

In date cultivation, manual harvesting is the dominant method used, which is inefficient in terms of both time and economy. Advanced agriculture automation such as robotic harvesting can significantly increase quality and yield, and reduce production costs and delay. One of the most important aspects in harvesting robots is their ability to interpret and analyze visual data. However, practical success in this area is still limited due to the difficulties caused by unstructured and unconstrained agricultural environments. Furthermore, to the best of our knowledge, there is no research in the area of machine vision for date fruits in the pre-harvesting and the harvesting stages. Hence, this research aims to develop intelligent systems for date fruits in an orchard environment, including robotic harvesting, fruit detection and segmentation, classification, maturity analysis, and visual yield estimation.

Agriculture robot consist in general of three main parts: a vision system, a control system, and a mechanical system. The mechanical system consists of two main parts: arm and end-effector and navigation system. The vision system provides information to the control system that gives orders to control the mechanical system of the robot. Accurate vision system to detect, classify, and analyze fruits in real-time is critical for harvesting robot to be cost-effective and efficient.
