Modern organizations are inundated with data; there’s a continuous increase in applications and devices that can automatically collect and store information.
Data Science is the study of data to extract meaningful insights. It is a multidisciplinary field of scientific methods, processes and systems to analyze and extract knowledge or insights from large amounts of data in various forms, either structured or unstructured. It aids in revealing patterns that enable stakeholders to make informed decisions.
The demand for data scientists has grown significantly globally, and in South Africa it was on the critical shortage list in 2023. A career in Data Science can lead to various job roles, such as a data analyst, business intelligence analyst, data engineer, software engineer, statistician, among others.
The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) has been ranked in the top 2.4% of 20 531 universities worldwide on the 2023 Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR) list. In addition, in 2023 UKZN was recognised as one of the top four universities in South Africa according to the University Ranking by Academic Performance (Urap).
