I CAN reach onbox system manager OK as well as SSH to the cluster mgmt LIF, but powershell connections and thus WFA connections fail. Details:

The maximum amount of partitioned disks you can have in a system is 48, so with the 2 shelves, we are at maximum capacity for partitioned disks. For the next shelf, we will need to utilize the full disk size in new aggregates.

It's possible to reassign disks so that 1 partition is owned by the partner node which will allow you to split the aggregate workload between shelves, however in the case of a disk or shelf failure both aggregates would be affected.

Next, I proceeded to add disks 0 - 11 to the node 1 root aggregate and disks 12 - 23 to the node 2 root aggregate. This partitioned the disks and assigned ownership of the partitions the same as shelf 1.

Because the system was initialized with only 1 shelf connected, it created the root partition size as 55GB as opposed to 22GB in my second test scenario above. What this means is that a 55GB root partition is used across the whole 2 shelves as opposed to 22GB. How much space do you actually save when using 3.8TB SSD's:

I have been trying compaction with some existing volumes that seem like good candiates. Multi TB in size, million of small files, that sort of thing.. Now I know this will take time to process, but has anyone had some experience with this to give some estimates, even wild ones are better than nothing

One of these volumes I have has an average file size of around 700 bytes, about 4TB of data space used. So taking a conservative estimate of packing 2 files into 1 block, my aggregate level savings should be at least 50% of the data set size. Ideally we should pack 5 of these in a block, but just working on an estimate to keep math simple. At the rate space savings is showing up on my aggregate, it looks like we are getting up to 500 MB / hour back. This looks like it will take many months to finish. Curious if this is a multi stage process that may speed up at some point, or if this is simlar to what others have seen.

I did some testing with small files on a non-prod environment, and when creating new files this worked as one would expect. So for new volumes this looks like a big win, but not sure if this is even worth running for existing volumes if it is going to take months to process a volume. I have many multi TB volumes with small archived image files where this could really save us a lot of space.

Since compaction takes place at the aggregate level, how does this work with Snapmirror? Is this going to mirror logical data to the target where it will need to be compacted while injested? If a source volume has compaction enabled, and the target aggregate also has compaction enabled, does snapmirror enable compaction on the target volume? Or if the source volume does not have compaction enabled, but the target aggregate and volume does, will the target get compaction disabled since the source volume is disabled?

I am in the process of building out a 9.0 simulator and I am not able to hit the system manager page via the cluster managment IP. I am able to ping the IP from the workstation I am tring to connect to it, but I am unable to access the webpage. I get a Not Found - The requested URL / was not found on this server error. Has anyone else encountered this issue? Please advise when you get a chance. Thanks.

Looking to see how people are spreading the load out between controllers and aggregates? Are you doing that per volume? how are you determing load? # of iops per volume? how would you get avg. iops over the past couple of weeks or months? What software are you using to determine volume load on the system?

Starting to wonder if there is some tool like vRealize Ops that can redistribute the load taking into account the last 6 months of saved data to get the best performance out of the system using DRS but would be able to do that via vol moves on the Netapp Storage side to distribute load between controllers and aggregates?

I have a client that purchased a FAS-2552 array with standard drives. About a year after the purchase auditors are insisting that the client encrypt their data at rest. They were hoping that ONTAP 9.1 would allow them to run NVE but the entry level arrays do not support it as there isn't enough spare processing power to allow it.

At first I thought no problem I would simply install another shelf of NSE drives and migrate the data over but I don't believe it's a risk free and simple processes. It is my understanding that you pretty much have to wipe all the data even the root volumes before you can turn on the encryption and then you have to recreate the volumes and restore from a snapmirror from across the wire. This process would need to be done twice, once for each site, so two full resync across the wire as well as a long outage.

Brainstorming I'm thinking we could physically unrack and move the DR array to the PRI site and do the same thing but its still going to take a significant amount of time. Going deeper down the rabbit hole I was entertaining breaking the cluster and configuring it as two single node clusters but talk about risk!

I have a source volume on a local filer that is setup for CIFS protocol and has a share with no qtrees. The volume is snapmirrored to a destination volume on a peered remote filer. Is it possible to have the destination volume on the remote filer be made available readonly so that people may access the share? I want the snapmirror relationship to stay intact. I did not want to clone the destination volume because I want the share to be available at all times.

We have expanded our single controller FAS2554 NetApp with a Shelf. Pro Shelf is a spare disk provided. But when we have added the disks to the aggregate, both of them are placed in a shelf. Is this normal or how to make it that each spare disk is in a diffrent shelf. Probably this is no longer possible to do, but have a second Netapp to extend we would gladly avoid this if possible.

I made snaplock compliance aggregate with ONTAP 9.1 ,and create volume in the compliance aggregate.

Then I halted ONTAP to initialize all disks using boot menu No.4 , but it couldn't be initialized.

All aggrigate including compliance aggregate is still remained.

Root volume is initialized yet.


I'd like to know How the compliance aggregate disks are initialized , and is it possible to reuse them?

We are using NetApp VSC 6.1 installed on vCenter server 5.5. I have a task to migrate VMware vCenter server to a new windows server. now on my existing vCenter server NetApp VSC is installed/configured. I need to migrate the vCenter server including the NetApp VSC from old vCenter server to a new vCenter server without downtime.

Testing complete power failure simulation to the E-Series 5600. The steps are to power down the E-Series, ensure access remains for all aggregates to the remote E-Series, power back on the E-Series, ensure the 5600 fully comes up, watch the FAS8080 regain pathing to the 5600, and finally have the FAS8080 present those disks back to the aggregates. What we found is all of those steps worked as expected except for the final step. (present those disks back to the aggregates) We tried this simulation multiple times and had the same results.
