# Fair Usage Policy — Data Eraser
**Publisher:** OscarTech
**App:** Data Eraser (`com.oscartech.shredder`)
**Version:** 1.01
**Last updated:** 27 July 2026
## 1. Purpose of the app
Data Eraser is a privacy tool for permanently removing files, folders and
residual data from a device you own. It is intended for legitimate data-hygiene
purposes such as protecting personal information, removing sensitive documents,
and preparing a device for resale, repair or disposal.
## 2. Acceptable use
You agree to use Data Eraser only:
- on files, folders and storage that you own, or that you are explicitly
authorised by the owner to erase;
- on devices you own or administer;
- in compliance with all laws and regulations that apply to you.
## 3. Prohibited use
You must not use Data Eraser to:
- destroy, conceal or tamper with evidence relevant to any investigation,
litigation, audit or legal proceeding;
- circumvent data-retention duties imposed on you or your employer by law,
regulation or contract;
- erase data belonging to another person or organisation without authorisation,
including on shared, borrowed, corporate or managed devices;
- interfere with the operation of a device you do not control.
## 4. Irreversibility and user responsibility
Shredding is deliberately irreversible. The app cannot restore shredded data and
neither OscarTech nor any third party can recover it for you. You are solely
responsible for verifying your selection before confirming a shred operation.
Back up anything you may need before using the app.
## 5. Technical limitations (best-effort erasure)
Data Eraser performs a **best-effort** secure erase. Android devices use flash
storage (eMMC/UFS) whose internal controllers may remap logical blocks through
wear-leveling and over-provisioning. As a result:
- overwriting a file makes recovery extremely difficult using software tools;
- it does **not** guarantee that every physical copy of every byte has been
destroyed;
- a specialised laboratory with chip-level access may still recover fragments.
For the strongest practical guarantee, combine Data Eraser with full-disk
encryption (enabled by default on Android 7 and later) and a factory reset.
Algorithms such as DoD 5220.22-M and Gutmann were designed for magnetic
(spinning-disk) media. On flash storage their original guarantees do not
strictly apply; they are offered because many users and organisational policies
require these specific patterns.
### 5.1 Copies outside the app's reach
Shredding affects the file you select, its entry in the system media database
and — on Android 9 and older — its cached thumbnail files. Android does not
permit an installed app to reach every copy that may exist. In particular, the
following are **not** erased by Data Eraser:
- **Cloud backups.** A photo already synced to Google Photos, Drive, OneDrive or
a similar service continues to exist on that service. Delete it there as well.
- **Copies held by other apps.** Messaging and social apps commonly save their
own copy in private storage that no other app may open.
- **The system thumbnail cache on Android 10 and later.** It was moved into
protected storage that no installed app can access. Data Eraser removes the
media-database entry, which stops the item being listed, but cannot overwrite
the cached image itself.
- **Copies on other devices or removable media** that were not selected.
If a file is sensitive enough to shred, review your cloud backups and any app
that may have received a copy.
## 6. Privacy
Data Eraser works entirely offline. It has no internet permission, contains no
advertising or analytics SDKs, requires no account, and transmits nothing off
the device. The optional shred history is stored in a local database on the
device only and can be deleted at any time from the History tab.
Storage access is requested only through Android's system document picker, and
only for the items you explicitly select.
## 7. No warranty / limitation of liability
The app is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied,
including fitness for a particular purpose. To the maximum extent permitted by
law, OscarTech accepts no liability for any loss of data, loss of profit, or
other damage arising from the use or misuse of the app — including data erased
intentionally or accidentally.
## 8. Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated when app functionality changes. The current version
is always available inside the app under the **About** tab.
## 9. Contact
For questions about this policy, contact OscarTech through the developer contact
details listed on the app's Google Play store page.
