After declaring war on the Asgardians, Norman Osborn has the Dark Avengers and those in The Initiative prepare for the Siege of Asgard.[18] Norman considers The Sentry, specifically his dark side, known as The Void, his secret weapon.[19]

In flashback, it is told how Robert Reynolds received his vast powers from experimental drugs, using his might as the Sentry to live the life of a superhero, while his darker emotions manifested as the Void. Osborn has manipulated Reynolds into allowing the Void to take over, to do Osborn's murderous bidding. Osborn has somehow recreated the addictive serum that gave Reynolds his powers, making him dependent on Osborn and his approval. Meanwhile, Reynolds's wife Lindy has been a virtual prisoner in the Sentry's Watchtower, has even attempted to kill him, and begs Reynolds to either kill her or let her go. Reynolds's warring personalities, however, have stalemated. The Sentry even attempts suicide, flying into the heart of the sun, but such is his invulnerability that it doesn't work. He tires of struggling against the Void. Norman orders Bullseye to kill Lindy, blaming her for Sentry's uncertainty and weakness.[20] When an emergency evacuation occurs, Bullseye takes Lindy on a helicopter, antagonizes her cruelly, then strangles her to death and dumps her body into the ocean. When Sentry arrives looking for Lindy, Bullseye claims that she committed suicide, out of fear of Reynolds, by jumping out of the helicopter in the countryside. Sentry leaves to look for her body. From this point on, it could be said that the murderous Void was in full control of Reynolds and his unprecedented power.[21]

He was a great ally for the second Dark Avengers team, but he was secretly plotting with Madame Hydra to overthrow the team once Norman Osborn was no longer useful to them. His costume reflects the darker nature of the team, with claws actually built-in in order to become a better impostor.

The most powerful entity on this list, as well as the most unstable, is the Sentry, a forgotten golden age hero supposedly revamped for Norman's team. However, his dark persona, The Void, hides within. The two go on many mental battles against one another, with The Sentry becoming the most dangerous member of the team.

Torn between his heroic Sentry side and his villainous Void persona, the Sentry has demonstrated his power time and again. Gaining his powers from a dark version of the Super Soldier Serum, the Sentry was granted powers that were equal to "a million exploding suns." It was even hinted that Sentry has a connection to divine power, and can manipulate the world on a molecular level - often subconsciously forcing his greatest nightmares and desires to come true.

In fact, at least one incarnation of the Dark Avengers directly grew out of the Thunderbolts - and the aforementioned Norman Osborn (you may know him better as the Green Goblin), the organizer and sometimes leader of the Dark Avengers in comic books, got the idea for his evil Avengers from his time as the director the Thunderbolts in one of their incarnations as secret government operatives.

So Thunderbolts may be on the menu, but given what's come before in the MCU, and the direct ties between the two teams in comic books, we're betting there will be at least a little Dark Avengers flavor in there. With that in mind, here's the history of the Dark Avengers - including their relationship to the Thunderbolts.

The new team includes evil marksman Trickshot as Hawkeye, South American spider deity Ai Apaec as Spider-Man, genetically engineered mad scientist Toxie Doxie as Scarlet Witch, super-strong female supremacist Superia as Ms. Marvel, mutant villain Gorgon as Wolverine, evil Thor clone Ragnarok, and finally Skaar, the son of the original Hulk who was born and raised on Sakaar (yes, if that sounds familiar, it's the planet on which most of Thor: Ragnarok takes place, and the setting of the comic book story Planet Hulk).

Walker brings the team together under his apparent leadership to escape the dark reality and return home, but back on the core Earth, Walker is seen leading the team as US Agent, still secretly under the mind control of Toxie Doxie.

After that, that was kinda it for the Dark Avengers. The team disbanded off-page without any further adventures, despite Toxie Doxie's apparent plans to keep them going with Walker under her power, and a new version hasn't been created since - at least not in comic books.

We now know that this underlying plot thread seems to be culminating in a Thunderbolts movie. But as we laid out above, in comic books, the Dark Avengers grew out of a later incarnation of the Thunderbolts, while the second Dark Avengers team was actually recruited back into the Thunderbolts program later - kind of like Marvel's version of Suicide Squad, though generally less deadly for the recruits. The two titles even shared numbering back and forth, with Thunderbolts being renamed as Dark Avengers with #175.

That's all strong evidence that Marvel Studios is liable to do what they often do in adapting comic book stories to film and TV, and collapse a bit of continuity into a more concise story - in this case, potentially bringing elements of the Dark Avengers' origins as villains taking on the mantles of known heroes to the Thunderbolts film.
