AcCord is an interface of alternative sound perception. Installation name simultaneously refers to a musical term and to an umbilical cord.
In the project audiovisual impulses are transmitted at the bodily level: the viewer perceives sound through vibrations and dynamic lights. The limitations of one’s auditory perception in the project acts as a metaphor of a maternal womb and brings a viewer to the prenatal level of world perception.
Embryos hearing is significantly different from the hearing of an adult. Immersed in a liquid medium, the embryo perceives sound with the whole body. Embryo’s ear is washed with amniotic fluid, therefore the sound is being perceived through his/her eyes, skin, and bones. Surrounding sounds are felt by him/her as a reflection of space within a womb. Those sounds are accompanied by a double cycle of heartbeats. These beats are like pendulum sentences that come in and out of phase, similar to repetition compositions — a phenomenon of minimalist music. The rhythmic basis, that consists of a heartbeat, changing pressure and external noises, sounds almost like a bass line.
Low-frequency vibrations at the tip of the umbilical cord, and dynamically changing lighting are used by the artist to recreate a sound and sensual perception of an infant. In the absence of one communication channel — audible speech — the viewer is offered to expand communicative experience and to build a new form of a dialogue based on non-audible perception.
