The story of Bilbao is driven by important industrial activities, which until the last decade needed to be reconverted because of the global transition of large cities into service-based economy. After the renowned Guggenheim Museum and its huge impact to the city, is relevant to ask what is the next step for the city to move forward?
The river (La Ría) has guided Bilbao’s urban growth and the activities related to the harbour, where it meets the sea. Not only because of its unique feature but also because of the steep topography that wraps the city from all around. In this sense, the project was developed as an strategic Master Plan that addresses, first at a larger scale, the economic dynamics of interaction between the harbour and the city itself, and secondly at an urban level, seeking for establish a system of urban spaces able to link the existing natural features that surround the city.
