An exhibit of more than 100 original photographs, periodicals, and ephemera from from the Waugh collection at the Sexual Representation Collection at the Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies. Launched during Pride Month, it was exhibted at the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto (and was extended for two months). The exhibit documented the role of physique photgraphy and magazines played in gay liberation in the United States as well as the complicated entanglements between race and sexuality at the time, offering insight into the midcentury gay erotic imaginary, sexualized racism, and the formation of a new national (and international) gay male community. The selection of images highlighted recurring themes in the photographs and magazines including bodybuilding, fantasies of domesticity, dress-up, and the erotic gaze and dovetail with beefcake preoccupations such as military servicemen, Classicism, cowboys, and homosocial or homosexual affection.
