Growing up in rural North East Texas provided me with opportunities to assist others in various ways. One of which was the ability to sit down with classmates and assist them with their homework and other class work. I believe these interactions prompted my love for education and assisting others.
To pursue this love of education, I enrolled in Stephen F. Austin State University to pursue a teaching certification. As I began my teaching career, I learned that teachers have a unique ability to influence the future and shape future leaders.
As I reflected upon the great responsibility of shaping the future, I knew that I could do so much more if I only had a greater influence. This reflection prompted me to pursue a principal certification with the idea that my influence could effect teachers and, by a trickle-down effect, influence an even greater number of students.
As I have continued in this approach, I obtained my superintendent certification in an effort to be in a position to positively influence an even greater number of individuals, all with the goal of assisting them to reach their greatest potential possible.
Throughout my career journey, there have been various side roads that I have gone down. One of which was obtaining my Special Education Certification when I learned of my daughter's Autism diagnosis. It was her diagnosis that has prompted my current area of educational interest and dissertation topic for my doctoral degree. I am highly invested in students with special needs and providing them with a challenging curriculum with appropriate accommodations that will allow them to become successful members of our society.
My son is a member of the Spirit of Waxahachie Indian Band and is already pursuing a college degree through dual credit courses at Waxahachie High School. Between his advanced academic pursuits and my daughter's special needs, I have gained a wide array of experiences that I feel are necessary to be a successful school board trustee. I want to take these experiences and apply them to the work of the school board. I want to enact policies for WISD that will allow all students to be successful not only in WISD but in life after their public education.
