The Vigil was to take place on September 14th A.S. LIV at Falling Leaves in Carolingia. This was to be when Gun∂ormr would learn of the duels, as well as what his part would be in them.
My challenge started with the opinion that he incorrectly performed the set and turn, specifically that he executed them to both the left and the right, instead of twice to the left. I asked for him to meet me just before the event’s dancing, to resolve our differences. The musicians played music segments from Heart’s Ease. In my dance I endeavored to highlight the superiority of setting and turning to the left twice. Once I was done Gun∂ormr responded in kind, setting and turning both to the left and the right. Unfortunately for myself, the judges felt his was the superior dancing.
Aelia Fortunata delivered the second challenge, accusing Gun∂ormr of not taking the art of dance seriously. She wished to meet him after the event’s dancing, when they would dance Il Canario, a largely improvisational dance. As with any improvisational form, this allowed for a more humorous contrast between contestants. After they had both danced, the judges determined his was the superior rendition, therefore proving that seriousness was overrated.
The final duel was set when Þóra Eiriksdottir informed Gun∂ormr that his saltarelli were wrong. She explained that the salti belonged on the fourth beat and not the second. She was determined to meet him immediately following his ordeal with Fortunata. When they met, the musicians played Lo Spagnoletto, which allowed for many uses of the saltarelli. For this challenge the dancers ended up dancing together (the danger of surprising one participant is they may not follow your script). Þóra was using the fourth beat for her salti and Gun∂ormr the second. It was agreed by the judges that between the two, only a hair’s breadth separated their skill but if forced to choose, his won the day. However, in a startling revelation, they also agreed that Lo Spagnoletto was in all ways superior and amazing when one participant used the second beat and one participant used the fourth.
