Impact of extrems on the energy sector in France - Case study of the July 2019 heatwave
Anastasia Akakpo-Numado
Extreme weather events, such as heatwaves and droughts, are becoming more frequent and intense due to climate change. These events disrupt the entire energy sector — from demand to production and distribution — threatening system stability and resilience. Renewable energy sources, particularly solar photovoltaic and onshore wind, are highly sensitive to dry extreme conditions.
In this poster, we present a case study focusing on the July 2019 heatwave in France, analyzing its impact on renewable energy production. By comparing past and present analog climatic conditions, we assess how extreme dryness affects energy resources and apply an attribution framework to evaluate the contribution of anthropogenic climate change.
