It is the largest hub for American Airlines, which is headquartered near the airport,[3] and is the third-busiest airport in the world by aircraft movements and the second-busiest airport in the world by passenger traffic in 2022, according to the Airports Council International.[4] As of 2021, it is the sixth-busiest international gateway in the United States and the second-busiest international gateway in Texas (behind Houston-IAH).[5]The hub American Airlines operates at DFW is the second-largest single airline hub in the world and the United States, behind Delta Air Lines's hub in Atlanta.[6]

DFW Airport has service to 254 destinations (191 domestic + 63 international) from 28 passenger airlines. As of April 2023, DFW Airport has service to more nonstop destinations than any other airport in North America. Every major city in the Continental United States can be flown to in four hours or less. It is also the largest carbon neutral airport in the world and the first in North America to achieve this status.[12]

Braniff International Airways was a major operator at DFW in the airport's early years, operating a hub from Terminal 2W with international flights to South America and Mexico from 1974, London from 1978, and Europe and Asia from 1979, before ceasing all operations in 1982.[27] During the Braniff hub era, DFW was one of only four U.S. airports to have scheduled Concorde service; Braniff commenced scheduled Concorde service from Dallas to Washington from 1979 to 1980, using British Airways and Air France aircraft temporarily re-registered to Braniff while flying within the United States. British Airways later briefly flew Concordes to Dallas in 1988 as a substitute for its ordinarily scheduled DC-10 service.[17]

Following airline deregulation, American Airlines (which had already been one of the largest carriers serving the Dallas/Fort Worth area for many years) established its first hub at DFW on June 11, 1981.[28] American finished moving its headquarters from Grand Prairie, Texas, to a building in Fort Worth located on the site of the old Greater Southwest International Airport, near DFW Airport on January 17, 1983; the airline began leasing the facility from the airport, which owns the facility.[29] By 1984, the American hub occupied most of Terminal 3E and part of Terminal 2E.[30] American's hub grew to fill all of Terminal 2E by 1991.[31] American also began long-haul international service from DFW, adding flights to London in 1982 and Tokyo in 1987.[32]

In a 2006 agreement brokered by Kay Bailey Hutchison, U.S. Senator from Texas,[44] DFW Airport, Dallas, Fort Worth, Southwest, and American agreed to mutually support the repeal, but with a number of conditions. The agreement permanently capped the number of gates at Love Field and gave American and Southwest preferential leases to the remaining gates. Until 2025, international passenger flights in the metroplex may only operate from DFW Airport; Southwest must surrender Love Field gates if it or any codeshare agreement partners offer flights from DFW or another airport in the metroplex; and the parties agreed to cooperatively oppose passenger service from other airports in the area.[26][46]

Terminal D is the airport's primary international terminal, with CBP (Customs and Border Protection) facilities to process arriving international passengers and has a gate capable of accommodating an Airbus A380.

DFW has a total area of 78 square kilometres (30 sq mi), making it the largest airport in Texas and the second largest in the United States (behind Denver International Airport). It is the third busiest airport in the world by aircraft movements, and the ninth busiest airport in the world by passenger traffic. It is the tenth busiest international gateway in the United States and second busiest in Texas (behind Houston Intercontinental).

During the 1950s two attempts were made by Fort Worth to convert Carter Field into a joint regional airport with Dallas participating as a full partner. Both efforts were rebuffed by Dallas, and expansion of Love Field continued. In May 1960 the airport, renamed Greater Southwest International Airport, was purchased by the city of Fort Worth to compete more successfully with Love Field, and a municipal board was established to supervise the city's airports.

In 2019 American Airlines opened the 23,130-square-foot terminal D international Flagship Lounge exclusively serving their first-class passengers, along with those of other carriers that through agreements share clubs. Air Transport World named DFW the 2019 Airport of the Year. But the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 caused a 90 percent drop in passengers at the airport literally overnight. Only 26,198 passengers passed through DFW in April 2020, for example. Even during the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic, however, DFW began or completed more than forty new infrastructure projects valued at more than $500 million with the creation of more than 4,300 jobs in North Texas. These improvements included the Runway 18R reconstruction, expansion of Terminal D, additional gates at Terminals A and C, upgrading the Terminal C garage, along with modification to International Parkway. Passengers can transit through to any of the five terminals on Skylink, which opened as a replacement for Airtrans in 2005. The free train is located within the security area. In another important project, the airline planned for a 390,000-sqare-foot Central Fulfillment Center that facilitates the speed of parts requests up to 75 percent.

The airport experienced a strong rebound in passenger traffic in 2021. Of the top ten busiest airports (in numbers of passengers) in the world for the year 2021, DFW ranked number two with 62,465,756 passengers (Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport [ATL] ranked number one). In 2022 approximately 73 million passengers passed through the five terminals at DFW. The increase in passengers transiting the airport was due to three main factors: an increase in new residents to the Dallas-Fort Worth region, an increase of foreign travelers and a streamlined customs process, and increased international business especially to Mexico. DFW became equipped with Global Entry Kiosks, making fluid the customs process, and a new system tagged Simplified Arrival uses biometric facial comparison technology and represents the latest innovation meant to speed up the process at DFW.

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is the 4th-busiest airport in the world, based on aircraft movement. The primary international airport for the combined metropolitan areas of Dallas and Fort Worth, it is almost equidistant from downtown Dallas (20 miles; 32 kilometers) and Fort Worth (23 miles; 37 kilometers), taking just over 20 minutes to reach the airport from both locations in normal driving conditions.

DFW airport, built between cities of Dallas and Fort Worth in 1974, at the time was the world's largest airport at more than 19,000 acres.3 Its location, with both U.S. coasts and all major U.S. cities being no more than four flight hours away, has made it a popular hub for passenger and cargo operations. DFW saw more than 64 million passengers use its terminals in 2015 (about 175,000 each day). Prepaid debit and gift cards are accepted at time of return only. In the U.S., debit or check cards may be used at the end of the rental for payment of rental charges. The same credit or debit card used to complete an online Pay Now reservation must be presented at the rental pick-up counter as a form of identification. At airport locations, proof of a return airline ticket is also required when using a debit card. Generally, at the time of rental, we'll require a credit card hold of total estimated charges. However, many rentals may require an authorization hold of the estimated rental charges plus $200 USD. If you have prepaid with a debit card, the hold will be $250 USD. A prepaid charge card is not accepted for this required hold and in case of reservation with non US currency, a credit card with same currency of reservation with equivalent USD amount would be required. The card presented at pickup will be the card of record for the rental. If you use a debit card at a location that accepts them, we will perform a credit check to ensure worthiness before releasing the vehicle and you must also present a second form of current identification. Prepaid reservations are only offered at participating locations. Upon paying your rental with a debit card, Avis will generally request an authorization hold against your account for the estimated charges of the rental but reserves the right in its sole, discretion, to request extra value based on certain factors as we deem appropriate. Many rentals may require an authorization hold of the estimated rental charges plus $200 USD. Rentals of 4 days or more may require an authorization hold of the estimated rental charges plus $300 USD. If you have prepaid with a debit card, the hold will be $250 USD. Some exceptions may apply. THESE FUNDS WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE FOR YOUR USE. If you selected Fuel Service Option, fuel price isn't included in your reservation total, but prevailing market rate will be added when you return your vehicle. Avis accepts most major credit cards as credit identification at the time of rental. Accepted credit cards: Avis Charge Card, American Express, AT&T Capital, Diner's Club Intl, Discover, China Union Pay, JCB, MasterCard, and Visa. Some locations may not accept each of the referenced cards. Coupons may be applied to prepay rentals. Vouchers or Avis rental certificates cannot be used in conjunction with a prepay reservation. Gift Cards (Avis or any other) are not allowed on prepay reservations. Most U.S. locations also accept bank debit cards with the Visa or MasterCard logo as credit identification at the time of rental if you are at least 25 years of age. In most cases, U.S. locations will perform a credit check for debit card renters to determine credit worthiness at the time of rental. The renter must meet Avis' minimum criteria in order to rent. When the rental is over, we will process the reversal but the bank may take time to post it back to the account - unless you already paid toward your rental, in which case the hold will be $250 USD. Your quoted rental rate is based on the exact parameters (locations, dates, etc.) of your particular rental - changing your confirmed reservation parameters could result in a different rate. There is no fee for making the following changes: vehicle type, options (GPS, protections, etc.), rental period dates/times, adding other drivers, switching between participating prepay pick-up locations within the same country. To change to a non-participating location or one outside of the original pick-up country, you must cancel your original reservation (with applicable cancellation fee) and re-book at then current rates. Non-permissible changes include: method of prepayment; name on reservation; changing your pick-up to a non-participating prepay location or one outside of the original pick-up country. If you still wish to make these changes, you must cancel your original prepay reservation with applicable cancellation fee and re-book at then current rates. At time of rental pick-up, location rental qualification rules apply. The name on all rental credentials (license and credit or debit card) must match the name on the reservation. If the names do not match, it is deemed a non-permissible change to your prepay reservation and must follow procedures to cancel and re-book at then current rates (with applicable cancellation or no-show fees). At the time of pick up, driver must present a valid driver's license and credit card (or debit card at participating locations) in the driver's name. A prepaid charge card is not an acceptable credential. All drivers must have a safe driving record. At time of pick up, driver must present a valid, drivers license and credit or debit card in the driver's name. If the drivers license is not U.S.-issued, you must present your drivers license and either a passport or a Canadian enhanced license in the driver's name. At the time of rental, the renter or authorized driver may be subject to an electronic DMV check from the issuing state of the driver's license, or may be asked to sign a declaration attesting to specific criteria. Positive identification in addition to your driver's license may be required. Your total rental rate is calculated based on the information provided at time of reservation. Vehicles are rented on a daily (24-hour) basis. There is a 29-minute grace period for returns. After 30 minutes late, a 3/4-day late charge + $.01 + taxes apply. After 90 minutes late, full-day late charges + taxes apply. There is no grace period for rental fees, surcharges and optional equipment or protections charges, so full-day late charges will apply for these items. Extensions or late returns result in additional charges. Rather than requiring customers to be 25 to rent, Avis now rents to customers between the ages of 21-24 with a valid credit card and driver's license. At time of rental, we will automatically apply an additional underage surcharge for these drivers. Additionally, the following restrictions also will apply for renters between the ages of 21-24: Renters of luxury cars, mini-vans, 12-passenger vans, specialty cars, full-size SUVs and premium SUVs will not be permitted. In New York State, the minimum age to rent is 18 with a $84-per-day USD surcharge for renters age 18-20 and a $35-per-day USD underage surcharge for renters age 21-24. In Michigan, the minimum age is 18 with a $41-per-day USD surcharge for customers between the ages of 18-20 and $28-per-day USD surcharge for customers between the ages of 21-24. In most states, the charge for additional drivers is $13-per-day USD per additional driver, with a maximum charge of $65-per-rental USD per driver. The additional driver fee in Nevada is $11.00-per-day USD per additional driver. The additional driver fee in New York is $3-per-day USD per additional driver. The following are exempt from additional driver charges: renter's employer or regular fellow employee when on company business; renter's spouse or domestic partner; disabled renters who have completed the non-licensed renter form. In California, a child, sibling, or grandparent of the renter is also exempt from the additional driver charge.
