Y2 P1 - Meanwhile Pavilion
STAGE 1: Pavilion Programme
For this project carried out in pairs, we were asked to design a temporary ‘meanwhile pavilion’ in Chesterfield, with an emphasis on reuse and passive design. Given the theme of 'exhibiting', we considered not just what could be displayed, but who needed to be seen. Our response focused on small businesses who often lack the resources to enter the renowned Chesterfield Market. We envisioned the pavilion to become a platform for opportunity: a flexible, low-cost structure that empowered local enterprise and responded to wider conversations about equitable access and sustainable development.
STAGE 2: Modular Design
In developing our design, we focused on a modular system using interlocking cork blocks that could be easily assembled into walls, doors, and display stands. We realised that a modular approach made the pavilion quick to construct and dismantle, ideal for a temporary, meanwhile use. Just as importantly, it offered flexibility: business owners could rearrange the blocks to suit their specific needs, allowing each stand to evolve and respond to different users, products, and events.
Our lifecycle diagram maps the pavilion’s journey from sustainably sourced materials to easy on-site assembly, flexible use, and full disassembly for reuse or recycling. This approach taught us how thoughtful, adaptable design can minimise waste while creating meaningful, temporary architecture.
FINAL DESIGN:
Pop-up Pavilion
The final design showcases our flexible, modular pavilion, highlighting its adaptability as a pop-up space for small businesses. Through this project, we learned the value of designing with flexibility and sustainability in mind, creating architecture that responds to changing needs while minimising environmental impact.
