BIOGRAPHY.
Meriill was one of many children born to Clan Alerion. Then her magic manifested. She was unfortunate in that she was the third child to develop magic within the clan and that made them an increasing target for Templars. Unlike some clans, Merrill was kept within her community until an opportunity arose at the next Arlathvhen. Keeper Marathari of Clan Sabrae was in need of a First and so Merrill was adopted into the clan to serve as Marathari's pupil and eventual successor.
Now an official member of Clan Sabrae, Merrill was quickly absorbed in training for her future role. The first thing she learned was how to hone and control her magic. She would need to know how to wield it both in the defence of her people but also to keep herself and others safe from the potential dangers that the Fade posed to all mages. She also devoted herself to learning the histories and stories of her people. It would be her job to remember them all and pass them down to the next generation when the time came. She approached both with gusto. She found it easy to fall into a fixation with learning the lost lore of the Elvhen. Though she was not expected to be constantly at study, it was easy for her to fall into learning as a means of coping with the sudden upheveal of being far from the only family she had ever known.
Thankfully, she makes fast friends in two other children her own age: a Sabare boy named Tamlen and an orphaned elf named Mahariel who is being raised by Clan Sabrae. The three are never seen far from each other and often get themselves into mischief as they grow and mature from children to young adults. They are her best friends and Merrill would willingly walk into Fen'harel's jaws to help them. Neither seem to mind her eccentricities and in fact seem to embrace her as almost like a sister.
Then the Fifth Blight arrives and everything goes horribly wrong.
STORIES.
Pre-games to Dragon Age: Origins. Merrill is a young elf born to Clan Alerion but living in Clan Sabrae as First to Keeper Marathari and one day their next leader. Her days are spent honing her magic and learning the lore and stories of her people. Her life isn't all work and no play for she has friends in two fellow elves: Mahariel and Tamlen. Then one day things all go wrong. This verse covers everything from Merrill's childhood until the very beginning of DA2 including Dragon Age: Origins.
Dragon Age 2. Clan Sabrae fled Ferelden when the Blight struck. However, they left two of their members behind but not forgotten. Desperate to try and help her two friends against impossible odds, Merrill secreteed the artefact that caused the trouble in the first place. When her plan was discovered, especially the fact she had turned to blood magic to achieve her goals, Clan Sabrae turned on her. She is a pariah amongst her people and doomed to be forever on the periphery of a clan she was once expected to lead until the day a human named Hawke wandered to their camp.
Dragon Age: Inquisition. After having rebuilt and purged an eluvian for the first time in millennia, there is no better expert in Thedas than Merrill Alerion formerly of Clan Sabrae. When the Breach opens, she makes her way to Ferelden initially to try and find if Mahariel and Tamlen can be traced and perhaps purged themselves. Instead, she is found in the Hinterlands by the newly formed Inquisition and her expertise on Eluvians and Elvhen lore proves too good to go to waste. Merrill in this verse replaces Morrigan as the advisor to the Inquisition on eluvians and Elven history.
