BIOGRAPHY.
Cullen was born in the village of Honnleath in Ferelden, the second-eldest of four. His family were not well-off but they weren't poor either. Honnleath was a village made up of farmers and their families with the land surrounding it covered in fields of crops and farm animals. From he was a child, Cullen dreamed of joining the Templar Order instead of following his father into the fields. He genuinely believed that Templars protected people and that they were a force for good in the world. He was somewhat starstruck by these knights wearing the flaming sword of Andraste on their breastplates and so decided that he would do everything in his childish power to prove himself worthy of standing among their ranks one day. He often swung around his wooden sword hoping that it would improve his strength even if the only opponent he had was his younger brother, Branson.
At age twelve, his dream finally seemed to come true. He was allowed to join the ranks of potential recruits to the Templar Order. He vowed that he'd dedicate himself to his studies and prove that he was worthy of being there despite being amongst his social betters. His zeal was quickly noticed and rewarded. He was a model recruit. He sung the Chant, learned his histories, and threw himself into bettering himself at combat training. By the time he was ready to take his vows, he was considered one of the most promising recruits in Ferelden.
At age eighteen, nearly nineteen Cullen took his vows and became a Templar. Immediately he was sent to Kinloch Hold to begin his life amongst his new brothers and sisters, protecting mages from themselves and others. He was young, idealistic, and eager to prove himself in his first official posting.
STORIES.
Dragon Age: Origins. Cullen is a young Templar posted in Ferelden's Circle of Magi. Inexperienced and somewhat naive, he develops a crush on one of the mages under his charge but is determined never to act on it. Things go to hell after the Battle of Ostagar and the mages at the battle return. Uldred summons demons and the tower is sent into anarchy. Despite the Templars best attempts to fight back, they are all whittled down until they've either fled or died...except for Cullen. Cullen is instead trapped and left to fight off demons on his own, slowly losing his mind from the trauma of seeing his comrade slaughtered and the temptation of the demon imprisoning him. By the time he is released, he is a changed man.
Dragon Age 2. After the events at Kinloch Hold, Cullen was sent to Greenfell to recover from his experiences. Eventually, he was sent to Kirkwall's Circle to serve as a Knight-Captain under Meredith Stannard. Changed after his experiences during the Blight, Cullen sees mages much differently now. He views them as ticking timebombs waiting to go off. They can't be treated as normal people because normal people can't summon armies of demons. His trauma is buried under his duty...until he realises Meredith is becoming more and more unstable. He's forced to make a choice between being a Templar and being a good man.
Dragon Age: Inquisition. After the fall of Kirkwall's Circle and the beginning of the Mage-Templar conflict, Cullen is temporarily promoted to Knight-Commander. Disillusioned with the life he'd dedicated himself to, he jumps at Cassandra's offer to instead work with her and leaves the Templar Order. When Divine Justinia's Conclave is destroyed, he finds himself the Commander and leader of the fledgling Inquisition. Under it all, he is battling to finally sever the last ties he has with his former life as a Templar in the form of the lyrium which he'd been taking for so long.
