State Route 101 and Route 41 interchange is in the heart of downtown Atascadero, California. By 1980, the original interchange and configuration built in 1956 was operating at a poor level of service due to inadequate turning lanes, close intersection spacing, and uncontrolled turning movements. The landscape scope included structural aesthetics on the bridge girder, barrier, columns, and abutments, as well as textured slope paving. The city's seal was also incorporated on the bridge barrier as a community identifier. Complete street elements included a pedestrian path connecting the adjacent residential developments to the commercial services with ornamental lighting and pedestrian-style bollards that match the historic character of the town. Ornamental planting and permanent irrigation are included as part of a child project to further enhance the area and retain the Classified Landscape Freeway status. This project was nominated for the 2011 Excellence in Transportation award in the Urban Highway category for innovative engineering design associated with construction staging, visual appeal, and quality of the user experience.
