Diatom Diversity & Distribution (D3) Laboratory

Observing the tiny glass-dwelling dynamos since 2014

Humans were not the first to invent glass. Since formation/ inception, countless little creatures known as diatoms, have made their house out of glass. They are jewels of glass beauty on the smallest scale of creation proving not all algae are ugly. Now we are enlisting their help to focus on several research areas.

D3 lab works on the ecological and evolutionary processes responsible for the current diversity and distribution of diatoms in the Indian subcontinent. Further, the D3 lab dwells on utilizing diatoms as a bio-indicator in water quality monitoring and as a biological proxy in predicting climate change. The diatom lipid production has also drawn our interest in biofuel production.

We hold South Asia's biggest Diatom Herbarium at Agharkar Research Institute (AHMA)!
