Cute Studio at the 2025 Los Feliz Writers Festival

We started day one at Desert Rose, where the Los Feliz Poet Laureate gave a talk about beating writers' block and tips for publishing. I learned that, to my surprise, I am not a "hostile writer." If anything, on my worst days, I might tend to be an "apathetic writer," though.
Later on day one, I parted ways with John, who went to his friend's bachelor party, to head to Brü for the next event of the day! Participants had to collect clues at businesses on Vermont Ave, and then write a flash fiction piece incorporating all of them. This definitely-not-apathetic writer won second place! I found inspiration for my title, "Hellcat," when one of the writers mentioned studying with T.C. Boyle at USC, and I remembered how my uncle, a USC alumni, used to call him that affectionately. It was the perfect title because my story was about an evil cat. Thanks, Unkie!
While there, I also noticed that there was only one of my Griffith Observatory watercolors left on the makers table at Brü! So I'll be buying some more nice paper and making a new batch of them very soon so they can restock. They seem to be very popular!
I read the first scene in my forthcoming webseries, East Hollywood PI, and it was really well-recieved! Laughs in every section, and I spoke clearly into the mic, which was the thing I was most worried about going into the reading. There were something like thirty-plus writers who went up and read, and a really supportive crowd turned out. It was an inspiring and uplifting evening, that just made me want to write even more. :)
I can't wait until next year's reading!

My watercolors are selling really well at Brü, so I had to do a restock last weekend when we stopped by for our Saturday coffee and pastry morning! Only 3 more originals left from my first Griffith Observatory series. Stop by to grab one if you're interested, or email me at rebecca.a.slater@gmail.com for a commission piece. 🙂

John and I stopped by Brü coffee on Vermont Ave to visit my watercolor series, which is now for sale on the shop's "makers table!" We might've also gone to pick up some pistachio croissants too. 🫢 Multitasking!

Very honored and excited to be included on the inaugural list of writers for the upcoming Los Feliz Writers Festival! I'm also going to be reading a new sketch I'm writing at the closing event, which just so happens to be set in, wait for it... Los Feliz! Can't wait to share it!

John and I had a great time sharing our art and connecting with friends, old and new, at the Newport Beach Art Festival. I sold 3 original watercolors and look forward to future shows!
It'd be cute to connect!
