The Department of Physics was established with the aim to emerge as a center for excellence in research and post graduation teaching at the frontier areas of Physics. Presently, the Department offers M.Sc. and Ph.D in Physics with specializations such as High energy Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Plasma Physics, Soft Materials. The Department of Physics is located at Gangtok, the capital town of Sikkim.
The university has a diverse student body, with students from different regions and cultures of India and abroad. This creates a vibrant academic community that is enriched by different perspectives and experiences. Situated in the lap of the Himalayas, Sikkim University offers a picturesque and serene environment that is conducive to academic pursuits and research.
There will be a two-day conference on the theme "Quantum Mechanics turns 100: The Past, Present and Future" on 21-22 March 2025.
Dr. Tamal Basak delivered an online talk titled "India’s Space Odyssey: A Look Back at Chandrayaan 3" on 23rd Aug 2024 i.e., National Space Day at Sikkim University, Department of Physics, Seminar Hall.
Asha Tongbrm successfully defended his thesis on 17th May 2024 under the guidance of Dr. Amitabha Bhattacharya.
