Thanks for Having Me Review: A Fun, Heartfelt Comedy of Modern Love

Keelen Kember’s new play is a delightful and witty exploration of Heartbreak, Friendship, and the Messy World of Modern Dating.

★★★★

Kember, who both writes and stars in the show, plays Cashel, a man who just went through a breakup after an eight-year relationship. He then finds himself moving in with his best friend Honey (played by Fergus Foster), who is the ultimate bachelor who doesn’t let his relationships become long-term. Their contrasting approaches to relationships create a funny and poignant dynamic. Cashel navigates his post-breakup blues but then quickly jumps to find a lover, while Honey remains steadfastly resistant to romance’s deeper entanglements.

Kember has written a plot that is filled with quick-witted exchanges and playful banter that keep the audience engaged for the play’s entirety. The humor feels natural, and the chemistry between Kember and Foster is transparent. Their friendship is at the center of it all; they bounce between annoyances, support, and wildly entertaining misunderstandings.

The production leans into its comedy with well-timed physical humor and clever staging, ensuring that even the quiet moments brim with personality. Yet, beneath the jokes, it offers an insightful take on the fears and vulnerabilities that shape our relationships. Whether you’re rooting for Cashel to find love again or secretly admiring Honey’s carefree approach, the play makes it easy to connect with its characters.

With its lively performances, snappy dialogue, and an endearing look at the highs and lows of dating, Thanks for Having Me is a refreshingly fun modern romance. Kember proves himself a talent to watch, both as a playwright and performer, in this charming and laugh-out-loud production.
