Review: David Tennant is a Dark, Dangerous, and Dazzling Macbeth

Max Webster has created a new version of the classic Shakespearean tragedy, a stunning spectacle, particularly in its masterful soundscape.

Following a sold-out run at the Donmar Warehouse last year, Macbeth arrives in the West End once more and is nothing short of a theatrical revelation. Directed with daring precision by Max Webster, this production offers a unique and thrilling interpretation of Shakespeare’s tragedy, condensed into a taut, pulse-pounding two hours that will leave audiences breathless. The witches, iconic in traditional productions, are absent here-at least in form. Instead, they exist as eerie manifestations of Macbeth’s unraveling psyche, their ominous influence ever-present in the whispers that echo through his mind. This bold choice elevates the psychological depth of the play, turning it into an intimate, chilling portrayal of ambition and madness.

What makes this production truly extraordinary, however, is its groundbreaking use of immersive and innovative sound design by Gareth Fry. It’s not every day that you find a pair of headphones strapped to your seat. This allows us to hear not only the dialogue but also the thoughts running through Macbeth’s tormented mind. The result is spellbinding. There are moments when the actors’ lines are whispered so intimately into our ears that it feels as if they are speaking directly to us. This blurs the line between spectator and participant. It’s a heightened sense of closeness that will send shivers down your spine, which amplifies the tension and creates a profound personal connection to the characters. Fry’s design, layered with Scottish music by Alasdair Macrae, grounds the production firmly to its roots, which draws us deeper into the world of Shakespeare’s Scottish play. It complements the stark emotional landscape of the play, which evokes a sense of timelessness and place.

At the heart of this production is David Tennant. He delivers a colossal performance as the title character, which is, quite simply, a masterclass in acting. His portrayal is a force of nature - raw, visceral, and utterly captivating. From the first flickers of ambition to his ultimate descent into madness, Tennant commands the stage with a magnetism that is impossible to look away from. His Macbeth is a man consumed by inner demons, and thanks to the immersive soundscape, we are privy to every chilling, paranoid thought that crosses his mind. It’s a harrowing trek that Tennant takes us on with astonishing emotional depth and intensity.

Tennant’s costar, Cush Jumbo, delivers an equally mesmerizing performance as Lady Macbeth. She brings a striking complexity to the role. Her Steely determination gives way to vulnerability as guilt takes its toll. Jumbo’s chemistry with Tennant is electric. Their scenes are tense, especially in the quieter, more intimate moments. In a production where every whisper can be heard and felt, Jumbo’s controlled, simmering performance is a masterclass in restraint and power. Her portrayal is a reminder that Lady Macbeth’s ambition is as fierce and consuming as her husband’s. Jumbo embodies that duality with precision and grace.

With David Tennant delivering yet another one of the finest performances of his career, Cush Jumbo’s powerful turn as Lady Macbeth, and the groundbreaking use of immersive sound, this production redefines what Shakespeare can be. Max Webster’s vision, supported by Gareth Fry’s ingenious sound design and Alasdair Macrae’s evocative music, creates an experience that is as intimate as it is thrilling. If you are planning to be in London this Autumn, make your way to see this unforgettable Macbeth!
