If you want a dedicated, plug-and-play solution for light utility towing on a specific SUV, choose CURT Class 3; if you need heavy-duty versatility with adjustable height and rapid ball switching for diverse loads, choose KYX Drop Hitch.
• CURT Class 3: Its greatest strength is the seamless, vehicle-specific integration with a limited lifetime warranty, but it trades off universal compatibility and cannot support vertical hanging bike racks. This pick is for owners of 2017-2021 Mazda CX-5s who tow small to medium trailers like pop-ups or ATVs.
• This pick is for pet owners and adventurers hauling heavy gear, livestock, or large RVs who need one hitch to rule them all.
The CURT Class 3 Trailer Hitch is designed with a singular purpose: to provide a reliable, factory-like connection for the 2017-2021 Mazda CX-5 (excluding diesel models). When I look at the data sheets, what stands out immediately is the precision engineering behind its vehicle compatibility. It isn't a generic bolt-on piece; it is engineered specifically to match the frame geometry of that generation of CX-5. This level of specificity means the installation process is streamlined through a plug-and-play design that integrates directly with the vehicle's existing electrical system. You get a standard 4-way flat output right out of the box, which powers your trailer's taillights, brake lights, and turn signals without requiring complex wiring modifications.
This setup shines when you are looking for dependable performance on lighter duties. In practical terms, this is the sweet spot for towing fishing boat trailers, pop-up campers, ATV trailers, and general utility trailers. If you own a dog and regularly take them on weekend trips in a trailer, this hitch provides a stable platform that keeps the load secure without overcomplicating your daily drive. The inclusion of a rubber dust cover to protect the terminals from dirt and moisture shows that CURT considered long-term durability even for smaller, recreational setups.
However, you should skip this product if your needs extend beyond the specific vehicle constraints or weight limits. It is not compatible with vertical hanging bike racks, which is a significant trade-off for families who rely on their SUV for transporting bicycles along with other gear. While the Limited Lifetime Warranty on the hitch itself and the One-Year Limited Warranty on the custom wiring offer peace of mind against defects, the product is fundamentally a specialized tool for a specific job, not a universal powerhouse.

The KYX Drop Hitch is built for those who demand raw power and adaptability above all else. If you are a pet owner who travels with large kennels, hauls heavy equipment, or moves livestock, the sheer structural integrity of this hitch is exactly what you need. The use of high-strength alloy steel ensures that whether you are pulling a massive travel trailer or a flatbed loaded with supplies, the hitch remains rigid and safe under extreme loads.
What truly sets this hitch apart in real-world scenarios is its 6-inch vertical adjustment capability. The multiple adjustment holes allow you to fine-tune the height by up to 6 inches, ensuring your load stays perfectly level regardless of whether you drive a lifted pickup truck or a low-profile SUV. This feature is critical for maintaining balanced towing dynamics and reducing sway, which can be dangerous at highway speeds. Additionally, the "Quick 3-Ball Switch" mechanism lets you change between 1-7/8", 2", and 2-5/16" ball sizes in seconds. This eliminates the frustration of constantly swapping mounts when you switch from a small cargo trailer to a large RV or boat.
Durability is another major selling point for the KYX model. It features a triple-layer treatment including powder coating and plating, which effectively resists corrosion from rain, salt, and mud. This makes it an ideal choice for coastal areas where boat ramps are common or for regions with harsh winters involving road salt. The inclusion of two anti-theft locks (keyed alike) and a heavy-duty anti-rattle clamp adds a layer of security and comfort. The anti-rattle clamp specifically helps eliminate the annoying clanking noise often associated with loose hitches, ensuring a smooth and quiet towing experience even on rough terrain.
