I'm trying to download a file from a remote location. I use PHP curl to accomplish this but the code always returns zero byte file (even ECHO returns nothing) and when I visit the URL on my browser it prompt to download the file. why the code won't download the file using curl?

curl then URL-decodes the given path, calls strlen() on the result and deducts the length of the file name part to find the end of the directory within the buffer. It then writes a zero byte on that index, in a buffer allocated on the heap.

If the directory part of the URL contains a "%00" sequence, the directory length might end up shorter than the file name path, making the calculation size_t index = directory_len - filepart_len end up with a huge index variable for where the zero byte gets stored: heap_buffer[index] = 0. On several architectures that huge index will wrap and work as a negative value, thus overwriting memory before the intended heap buffer.

By using different file part lengths and putting %00 in different places in the URL, an attacker that can control what paths a curl-using application uses can write that zero byte on different indexes.

I am facing the problem that dvc silently uploaded corrupted files (zero-byte files) to my Artifactory remote (http-based remote). This happened not only to me but also other colleagues. This issue mentions zero-byte files caused by VPN issues but I think it might be another underlying problem.

I tracked this problem to the variable headerbytecount being 0 in Curl_retry_request function. This used to be a number bigger than zero in curl-7.15.5 and older. Here is a simple program that will trigger this problem:

read_to_end() will block until it encounters EOF. In the case of a TCP stream, EOF means the connection was terminated. I think the the op needs to read from the socket until the op finds a double newline signaling the end of the headers, then parse the headers for a Content-Length header to get the length of the body to know how many bytes to read from the socket AFTER reading the double newline. The chunk containing the double newline will most likely contain some bytes after the double newline, so those extra bytes must be subtracted from the Content-Length, e.g. the op needs to do a:

I ran into similar problem couple of days ago when i started to deploy my containers into new VM environment. I have docker swarm running, user defined docker overlay network and containers attached to that network. And by some strange reason containers failed to communicate with SOME of the servers in outside world. Most of the curl/wget requests worked fine, but with some specific servers they failed ( for example). They did reach connected status and after that just hung there. Curl on host machine worked just fine. Same containers and swarm setup on my local machine and on AWS worked just fine. But in this new VM it did not.

My guess is that curl and wget do not automatically follow the redirect, but will return the headers and let you figure out what to do about it. I would look at the documentation for those programs. I have not, and I am off to a meeting, so I shan't do it now

Maybe I missed something, but as I told in my first post, I've tried to follow redirections as well. Wget follows redirections by default, while curl needs to be called with the -L option.

Oddly enough, the redirection is toward the main page, not the file.

Personally I'll be using curl, so not worried either way. I can see the benefit to leaving wget in there though, adblock-lean will still run if someone forgets to install or doesn't want to for whatever reason.
