Just now discovered your blog! i love it! Anyone who can rock an armadillo cake like that is awesome in my book! LOL! And the cuppa recipe!!! (we make a scary "cuppa" peach cobbler in my family...being southern rules! hahaha!) And i cannot even begin to tell you how many times Steel Magnolias gets quoted 'round here...can't say something nice? Sit next to me!

Anyway, great blog, i am surely going to come visit again very regularly! :)

Hi, I also love Steel Magnolias and was lucky enough to play Ouiser in a community theatre production last year. At the time I made some 'cuppa cuppa cuppa' using canned fruit salad. It seemed fine... we all like it. But I just thought I'd check that fruit cocktail is fruit salad 'cos I want to make it again. The directer of our play had an Armadillo cake made for the last night of the play... it was great. It is one of the best films ever. Thanks, Barb, Melbourne, Australia.

I have been making and enjoying cuppa cuppa since i was a very small child. its a tradition in our family to make it on every camping trip. our recipe runs a little differently than the one in the movie and is unique because it is cooked over hot coals..

1 stick butter

cuppa flour (self-rising)

cuppa sugar

cuppa milk

peaches (3-4 fresh or ~2 cups canned, drained)

so you melt the butter in the bottom of the baking dish. (we use a dutch oven and cook it in the coals of the camp fire) while it is melting, mix together the milk sugar and flour so that there is no clumping, then pour it into the dish. place as many sliced peaches on top of this mixture as you want (you can use other fruits too like frozen berries are good). put the lid on and cover the top with coals. check on its progress every now and then and when it is golden and fluffy its done! sometimes the bottom or the side closer to the fire gets a little burned but its delicious!

love this..... I love Steel Magnolias, your cake is great, we do not have the guts (or counter space) in the UK for such cakes, I have always wanted to try the cuppa cuppa cuppa cake and now I will......

I directed an amature version of the stage play a few years ago. Along with the cast I made some of the goodies found in the script (cuppa cuppa cuppa, armadillo cake, white chocolate cherry cheesecakes, etc.) to sell at the interval. All went down extremely well, and made some nice cash for charity.

I am in throws of playing Clairee in a community theater group. One of our performances will be a 'dinner theater/tea. We are serving all the things mentioned in the show; cuppa, cuppa, cuppa white chocolate cherry cheese cake, pecan tassies, shrimp meat pies, crab claws and possible hot dogs. And of course armadillo cake. The cast will be serving at the tea in character. We are all looking forward to next Thursday( the day of the tea and this Friday, our opening night.

we are in a little town in up state western NY named Alden.

Just wanted to post and say my husband and I made the cuppa cuppa cuppa last night, just out of curiosity. Steel Magnolias has always been one of my favorites, and it is the only movie I think I can recite from start to finish, so when the line entered my head the other night I thought "we should try that and see how it comes out"! I know a bit about baking, and I thought it would be weird, but I was so curious to just do it without making any changes, just to know if it was indeed a real recipe, or just some strange concoction created by a playwright. Well, I have to say my husband and I both side with your opinion - we thought it was horrible! It tasted like Play Doh.... with fruit, I suppose, but the flour taste was way too strong. Now my husband has been talking about trying to improve on it, though, by using things like cinnamon, brown sugar, vanilla, or even lemon..... but then it isn't cuppa cuppa cuppa anymore, is it?

I ADORE Steel Magnolias (I wish someone had made an armadillo cake for my wedding reception too) Oh and just for fun I'll insert a quote as well, let's see how well I can do from memory... Shelby- "My reception, my reception...ferns, dance and tons of people...weddin' cake in the gazebo and the groom's cake...hidden in the car port!" I have been watching that movie since I was tiny, I know every last line and my husband WILL NOT let me watch it when he is home because I quote it the whole time and he gets aggravated! LOL It is certainly a classic! Anyhow, I have ALWAYS wanted to make the cuppa cuppa cuppa cake, but was never sure if those were the only ingredients or what, so I took from them and added a few, which I am guessing negates the cuppa cuppa cuppa aspect, but its similar. LOL

My version is

1/2C flour

3/4C brown sugar

1 tsp. backing powder

dash of salt

dash of cinnamon

the zest of one lemon

the zest of one orange

1 can of fruit cocktail with juice

Mix well

pour into pie plate

top with 1/4C brown sugar and chopped walnuts and then bake at 350 for about 30 minutes. I still serve with the vanilla ice cream...you know to "cut the sweetness"!

I knew I had to try this recipe because Steel Magnolias happens to be my absolute favorite movie of all time! And once I tried Truvy's signature cuppa cake? I was in love! This cake was not only easy, but delicious too.

As soon as you pull this cuppa cuppa cuppa cake out of the oven, you'll be met with the cozy aroma of grandma. Sweet, fruity, and delicious smells give a hint of the rich flavors that are soon to tempt your taste buds. 2351a5e196
