This counselor questionnaire draws mainly from the work of Dalia Khoury and Jennifer I. Manuel (2016). Together, they define and introduce the concept of Multicultural Competence toward Arab-Americans (MCCAA). MCCAA combines established concepts from psychology and sociology and applies them to cultural competence toward Arab-Americans. The first component of MCCAA is the Multidimensional model of Cultural Competence (MDCC). Then lessons from Critical Race Theory (CRT) and Intersectionality are incorporated. Additionally, a counselor's 'readiness for change' is essential to MCCAA. And finally, these approaches are applied to an Arab-American context to form MCCAA.
Employing the concept of MCCAA, we have formulated a counselor questionnaire with the aim of measuring and improving counselor's cultural competence toward Arab-Americans. By answering this questionnaire, counselors will gain a clearer understanding of their own level of cultural competence toward Arab-Americans and identify gaps in their existing knowledge. This questionnaire is not only designed as a tool to asses the consolers level of understanding of their Arab American clients, but also invites them to think critically about how culture, family dynamics, religion, and other factors can shape their Arab American clients experiences. Ultimately, the goal is that this tool well help with bringing more respectful, culturally responses, effective practices when working with an Arab Client to best fit their needs. We hope this will result in increased cultural humility, readiness for change, and openness to requesting consultation for treating Arab-American clients.
