You will be guided through a series of relaxation techniques and exercises designed to help you let go of physical tension and create more space for breath, release, and relief. Based in Fitzmaurice Voicework, these methods promote wellness in both performers and non-performers alike. The workshop will focus on breath, but you may be asked to make sound as part of the work on release (participants will be muted for most of the session).

The three that ran with Juanito had experienced similar situations. The teacher seated the slum children beside the well-to-do children so that they could share books for reading. The well-to-do children held their breath with disgust and couldn't hide the nervous twitch that took over their faces and necks. There were also other sporting practices such as name-calling, demeaning jokes, isolation, tripping and threats. But the favourite sport of the well-to-do students was to transform them into scapegoats each time that something got lost in the classroom.

That Sunday morning his mother was on shift at the maquiladora. She was almost always on shift. Juanito only saw her in times of rest, when she slept. Every chance he got, he curled up beside her, synchronizing his breath with hers and pretending to join her in her usual, exhausted deep sleep. Juanito came out of his shack and there were the other three. It is difficult to say: "and there were his three friends." Poverty in the slums is such that Juanito has no money, no hair, no friends, no vaccinations, no father, no iron in his blood, no calcium in his bones, no education, no religion. The only thing that Juanito and the other three have, the only bit of humanity they have left, is their need to see justice done. And so Juanito and the other three have spent the whole night catching cockroaches and putting them in a rusty milk tin. It was cheap, because Juanito and the other three dervishes had plenty of cockroaches.

"It is always a gift when you find a book that speaks to the questions that echo inside us all. What If? But from there, Alisha's bold decision to answer that question is delivered to us with such refreshing audacity and wild charm. For anyone looking for a breath of inspiration or that big gasping sign that it's time to reclaim yourself and find your own answers, Alisha's book is here just in time."

-Marisa Renee Lee, author of Grief is Love

Here we go. Start with a deep breath. Okay, I noticed as I was saying that I was holding my breath. Breathe. Okay, so we're going to start in a seated position or laying down, whatever is comfortable for you. And now you can bring your attention to your body, and you can close your eyes if that's comfortable for you. And you can notice your body wherever you are.

As you exhale, you have a sense of relaxing, and you can notice your feet or body on the floor. You can notice your back against the chair or maybe on the floor. Bring your attention into your stomach area. If it feels tight, let it soften. Notice your hands, arms, shoulders, and let them be soft. Let your jaw and facial muscles be soft. Notice your whole body present, and take one more deep breath. Okay.

Gail: It doesn't take very long too, and I know that when I was teaching on a regular basis, just having those moments where I could just feel that tension in my body, and it just takes a moment to take a breath before I interact.

Gail: That's right. Owl's Pals, that's a great social and emotional curriculum. I see that one coming up. Tucker the Turtle, we know about that. That's a great one. Trying to hang in there. Sarah, yes, that is so important. It's just that trying to hang in there, taking those deep breaths, getting centered, and getting back into it and knowing that this is part of the job.

Heather: No, no, no. We got it right here. Remember, guys, we planned it this time. Oh, Eddie, hey, I just happen to have it right here. OK, wait. Here's my mad card because I need to breathe some more. I feel better now. I'm going to get one of those books you guys told me about. Teacher, will you help me? I will. It's hard for Eddie to hold the book, huh? I'm going to find an idea because that's what you guys told me last time. Find an idea in my book. And I don't have to read it, right? We have to look at it, right, Marilyn, because there's pictures, right? Pictures for Eddie. Oh, yeah, I remember. We've been practicing a long time, ever since we started school. Okay, here we go. Sharon, can I trade a block with you? Say no.
