There are many excellent books written for the horologist, apprentice, or professional clock shop, but this book is written specifically for a novice clock owner who has an interest in maintaining their cuckoo clock as a hobby and does not own a shop full of expensive and sophisticated tools.

Since I started writing, this book has taken on a life of its own. As I proceed through this writing journey, I discovered that most of the clock repair skills could be broken down into simple steps that the average clock owner can understand and follow.

Traditionally, cuckoo clocks were handmade by a team working together to create distinctive timepieces. Each person has their part and skills: case, decorative carvings, bellows, hands, dial, bird, weights, pendulum, etc. When the clock is finally assembled, all the parts must work together in harmony.

The outer worked wood case is usually made of beautiful dark wood that is intricately carved with folk and forest scenes. The clock itself is made in the premier clock-and-watch-making area of the world. When the tiny wood cuckoo emerges to call the hour, two small pipes attached to two miniature bellows make his call.

The chalet clocks look like Alpine or Black Forest houses. These days, they are more popular than traditionally carved cuckoo clocks. The chalet cuckoo clocks range from traditional Black Forest house to Tudor Style framework houses. The clocks show traditional scenes of everyday life and often have moving elements/figurines.

Traditionally carved cuckoo clocks look back on a longer tradition than chalet cuckoo clocks. The most popular are hunting and forest scenes. They are equipped with large hand carvings of scenes from nature like leaves, birds, or deer.

It is impossible to overwind your cuckoo, however you may damage the chains if you continue to pull on them once the weights have reached the base of the clock. Regulating your clock. You can adjust your clock to run faster or slower. To make your clock run faster, unhook the pendulum and slide the pendulum carving up a bit on the pendulum stick; to make the clock run slower, pull the carving down a bit. Reattach the pendulum to the pendulum leader at the base of the clock. Set your clock using an accurate time source after each pendulum adjustment. Once your clock is accurately regulated, you can mark the back side of the pendulum stick with a pencil indicating the position of the carving on the stick. If the carving is accidentally moved, you can easily replace it to its correct position.

If after taking the steps above the cuckoo call and bird are still not working, check to see that the lift wire is under the cuckoo bird rather than on top of it. One common cuckoo clock problem is when themusic does not stop playing after the cuckoo call, which means there is aproblem with Swiss-made music box (the Swiss music box is the only component among all the German cuckoo clock parts made outside of the Black Forest). In many cases, the brass leverthat grips each hole on the side walls of the music box causing the music to stop is bent. Use a pair of needle-nosed pliers to slightly bend the brass lever so that it sets down in the hole andstops the music after the cuckoo call and cycle. This will allow the music to start properly the next time too.

Another common cuckoo clock problem is thatthe release on the brass lever is too large, which means the cuckoo clockcannot start the music box. Look for a small white rubber stopper on the lever, and pushit a fraction (1/30th) of an inch down, which should solve the problem.

An authentic Black Forest German cuckoo clock is much more than a novelty. Each is its own individual work of art. 1. After removing the clock from the box, unpack each of the items carefully. For now, leave the chains on the bottom of the clock wrapped. Be sure to unwrap each of the other paper bundles as there may be tiny pieces inside. If you have a traditional carved hunting model your box will include the following: clock, top piece, deer head, antlers (left and right), horn bell, pendulum, and either two or three heavy weights. If you have a chalet cuckoo clock, your clock will not include a top piece.

3. Slide the top piece onto the clock. The top should have two bent pins which correspond to two holes in the roof of the clock. Slide these pins into the holes. You may have to turn the pins so they are perpendicular to the holes. Rather than pins, some clocks have screws which slide into saddles thereby holding the top in place. Some high-end cuckoo clocks have top pieces that attach with small screws. There should already be holes drilled in the top to receive these screws. Be careful not to over-tighten these screws. They should be just tight enough to hold the top piece in place. A fourth method of attaching the top piece also exists: the clips. These are very simple. Simply make sure there is enough tension on these clips and slide them over the edge of the cuckoo roof.

To set the time turn the minute hand backwards (counter-clockwise) until the clock shows the correct time. Do not move the smaller (hour hand). After the first hour the cuckoo should call the correct time.If you move the minute hand clockwise you must wait each time for it to finish its call and music before you continue.

After setting the clocks hands make sure the cuckoo shut off switch is to the ON position. (figure 7)

To wind the clock pull the chain without the weight hanging on it (the end with the brass ring) directly towards the floor. Do not help the weight up by touching it or lifting it.

To regulate the time: If the clock is running fast, gently slide the pendulum leaf or disc downwards. LOWER IS SLOWER. If the clock is running slowly, gently slide the pendulum leaf or disc upwards. 2351a5e196
