SEWAGE/WASTEWATER⇨ EFFLUENT

What’s the Story?

Yikes, Yuck! Wastewater that should be treated by a wastewater treatment plant sometimes gets released directly out into a waterway as effluent! This was very common all over the United States prior to the Clean Water Act of 1972, which regulated releases of wastewater into the environment and made a major impact on water pollution. Although rare, there are still locations where old pipes release water that has not been filtered or treated! If these outflows are discovered, they can be fixed, and sometimes there is a fine or other consequence for the illegal pollution.
