OCEAN/HARBOR ⇨ WATER TREATMENT PLANT

What’s the Story?

Whoa, that is fresh!  When water from an ocean or harbor is used for consumption, usually by humans, it needs to be processed first.  This process is called desalination, which removes the natural “salt” minerals from the ocean water to produce potable freshwater at a desalination plant.  When freshwater sources are limited, especially in island communities or desert environments, desalination is a solution.  Although this can provide people with water in places it would otherwise be scarce, there are some environmental costs to consider, like polluted byproducts and the energy intensiveness of the process.
