MUNICIPAL WASTEWATER TREATMENT ⇨ POTABLE WATER
What’s the Story?
“Toilet to Tap”..... WHAT?!! That’s right - in some places, particularly where access to potable water resources in the environment is scarce or droughts impact water supply, municipal wastewater treatment plants can be designed to not only treat and release wastewater back out into the environment and water cycle, but to purify it to the point it can can be returned directly back as potable water for human use (hence the nickname “toilet to tap” or “flush to faucet” or “waste to taste”)! Although this may sound gross, it is a way to conserve scarce water supplies by essentially recycling water through a municipal system. In a toilet to tap system, water purification technology needs to be sufficient to remove a wide range of contaminants that can be in wastewater, in order for it to be safe for reuse.
