GROUNDWATER ⇨ POTABLE WATER
What’s the Story?
Now that is a powerful pull! Although water can be hundreds or thousands of feet underground in an aquifer, it is pumped up into wells to be used in homes, businesses, schools, farms, and more. “Potable” water means that it is acceptable for drinking. Since groundwater is not typically exposed to oxygen and can be protected from surface pollution deep in the ground by many layers, it is often pure enough to drink, with minimal bacteria or other contaminants that would require it to be treated. However, this is not always the case and often well water needs to be cleaned due to unsafe bacterial levels, naturally occurring metals, or pollution that has seeped into the ground and contaminated the water. Most people who use groundwater for homes install filters so that any sand, soil, and natural minerals that travel with the water do not affect their pipes or appliances.
