EFFLUENT ⇨ OCEAN/HARBOR
What’s the Story?
Swoosh! Effluent is water that has been treated and released back out into the water cycle. Water flows from the end of a big pipe out into the ocean! Even though it’s “clean” after a process at the wastewater treatment plant, it can still be carrying chemicals and contaminants out into the ocean environment! Effluent can be highly chlorinated after disinfection, and can have other pollutants that are difficult to remove in the wastewater treatment process with available technology, such as microplastics, pharmaceuticals, chemicals from personal care products & cleaners, and toxic PFAS compounds. Yuck! Well, definitely cleaner than before - hopefully it isn’t harmful to the amazing marine life in the ocean where the effluent comes swooshing out the end of the pipe!
