CSO ⇨ RESERVOIR/LAKE

What’s the Story?

ICKY!!! Overflowing the sewer system... bypassing the wastewater treatment process!! When there is a big rainstorm, too much water can flood the sewage system, causing stormwater and wastewater to mix and overflow. This means untreated, raw sewage can be part of flood waters (gross!). When a CSO (combined sewage overflow) occurs, contaminated water overflows and leaks out into a lake, causing water pollution. This type of pollution can cause harmful algal blooms - contaminating drinking water in a reservoir, hurting wildlife, and making recreation unsafe.
