CSO ⇨ OCEAN/HARBOR
What’s the Story?
Ewwww!!! Overflowing the sewer system… bypassing the sewage treatment plant!! When there is a big rainstorm, too much water can flood the sewage system, causing stormwater and wastewater to mix and overflow. This means untreated, raw sewage can be part of flood waters (gross!). When a “combined sewage overflow” (CSO) occurs, this contaminated water could be released into the nearest body of water, like the ocean harbor. No fun for swimming at the beach!! This type of pollution can cause harmful algal blooms, hurting wildlife and making recreation unsafe.
