AGRICULTURE ⇨ CLOUD
What’s the Story?
Oh boy! Floating away! Agriculture, or farming, is one way water vapor gets into the air. When animals breathe, there is vapor in their breath. When plants transpire, water that was in the plant leaves through their leaves! When water in the soil gets energy from light, heat, and wind, water molecules speed up and separate, a process called “evaporation.” Because water molecules in vapor are so small, they become part of the surrounding air. This water vapor can make the air feel a bit “heavier” - this is called humidity. Humidity occurs most often when the air temperatures are warm or hot. As water vapor rises into the atmosphere, the air gets colder - water molecules slow down and begin to bond together and form tiny droplets. This is called “condensation” and it’s how clouds are formed!
