As covered in the Switch Access Systems module, single and multiple switch systems, along with screen scanning, provide computer accessibility for many students with fine and gross motor limitations. It is important for educators and students to understand the benefits and challenges that are a part of using switch systems and screen scanning to control a computer.
This one-hour module is a part of our Game of Access training services, and is designed to provide hands-on experience in using on-screen scanning software to control a computer system. The activities include:
Let's get started!
Activity 1 - Watch the CrossScanner video below.
Activity 2 - Download the trial version of CrossScanner (Windows or Mac) from the RJ Cooper website. Install the software and replicate the activity in the video, doing a search in Google or another search engine for information on "whales". You can attach a switch or switches, or you can use a mouse click as a switch. A ReadMe file that comes with CrossScanner is below, along with a PDF of the presentation in the video so you can quickly refer to the software settings options.
Activity 4 - Additional Exploration
Meet Jared, and discover how he uses a switch system to control a computer and connect with the world. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bhj5vs9P5cw.
