The Daily Formative Evaluation
The Daily Formative Evaluation
A rating of 1 or 2 signals areas for improvement, not failure — often related to preparation or knowledge gaps.
Below-benchmark evaluations (2 or lower) are reviewed by the Director of Clinical Education at the school, prompting supportive follow-up with the student.
Remediation is not punitive — it's a structured, one-time opportunity for growth, involving assigned preceptors and weekly faculty meetings.
Patterns of underperformance, not isolated incidents, lead to consideration for remediation.
Accurate evaluations are essential — inflated scores mislead students and delay needed feedback or support.
Written documentation (in the evaluation or via email) is required if issues arise — for accountability and continuity. Always be objective and professional in your documentation.
Honest feedback early on prevents long-term problems; consistency across preceptors is key to effective evaluation.
Students value tough but fair evaluations — meaningful praise from a respected, demanding preceptor carries lasting impact.
When to contact the clinical coordinator
If a student is struggling or not meeting expectations
If a student excels or exceeds expectations
If you have concerns related to safety, behavior, mental health, or any other issue you'd like to discuss
This interview with faculty was conducted in July 2025.⁶
